There are lots of articles about Rory Root from all across comics... Here's Tom Spurgeon, and Brian Hibbs and this is a lovely tribute and an excellent round-up. He was such a good guy. The world of comics is better for him having been here. ... So

This is good news indeed. Russel T. Davies is stepping down as the lead writer and executive producer of the new Doctor Who series and when that happens theres always some concern over who takes over the reins. While I appreciate the fact that DWs

Season Four Saturdays: Silence in the Library

    http://blogthispal.blogspot.com/2008/06/season-four-saturday...
177 days ago in Feed THIS, Pal! · Authority: 19

(Another spoiler-free review, especially since spoilers are part of the plot. Will explain shortly). God bless Steven Moffatt. Granted, it is fitting that he will take over the reigns of modern Who in 2010 after Russell T. Davies leaves. He, as much as Davies, is kind of the architect of modern Who, taking its traditional strengths and building upon them. In fact, his scripts show an incredible imagination - from Season One's "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" two-parter (which contains the funniest - and most touching - scenes with the Ninth Doctor), to Season Two's "The Girl in the Fireplace" (with its duelling time lines) and Season Three's "Blink" (utilizing commonplace statues as a source for horror). "Silence in the Library" - while it cribs from the latter two scripts (as well as some classic Who imagery), is one of the better scripts this season, picking up on some threads from - believe it or not - "The Fires of Pompeii". Our story takes place between two different time frames - seemingly present-day Earth and, seemingly, a planet-sized library in the future. (An obvious cop to several prominent comics bloggers - well played, Mr. Moffatt, well, played). At one, a young girl's nightmares seem to be coming true; at another, people mysteriously disappeared, sealing off a facility for 100 years. There is, unusually, a relationship between the two...but what is it? How do the Doctor and Donna figure in? What will happen next? The best thing about this story - at least, the first part - is that it builds upon traditional Who strengths. First, there's the idea that more questions are asked than answered - one criticism of new Who has been that it has sacrificed mystery for whiz-bang storytelling....here, there is a gradual build of questions, and things happen that almost require a second episode for resolution. The main idea behind the "big bad" (namely, shadows as "piranhas of the air") is a seeming retread of "Blink"...but the way Euros Lyn directs the episode makes is almost a casual mixture of horror and noir. Plus, the main setting at a futuristic library also seems rather appropriate - given that, long before Alan Moore wrote League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Who tended to borrow heavily from literary sources, so much so that it's refreshing that books, rather than a high tech version of Project Gutenberg or Librivox, are considered a key commodity in the future. But the main thrust of the story - and which the classic series only covered once - is "foreknowledge" of the Doctor's future, as suggested by the presence of Dr. River Song, played by ER's Alex Kingston. There are various hints about Dr. Song's role in the Doctor's "later" life...and quite cleverly, Moffatt also integrates the idea of "spoilers", or foreknowledge of the future. In short, there is one scene that seems to be a blatant spoiler...either that, or it's really poor foreshadowing. It seems clumsy, especially in light of the "cliffhanger"...but I am hoping that part two of this story, "Forest of the Dead", reconciles many of the plot lines from this one. In short, after something as disastrous as "The Doctor's Daughter", anything that comes after it would be seen much more positively. Having watched "The Unicorn and the Wasp" again, I found myself liking it even more...and a great "calm before the storm". Now that we've passed the midpoint of the season, everything will start coming together. So bring on "Forest of the Dead" Stay tuned. P.S. I will be volunteering at Wizard World Chicago on Saturday, June 28th...so please, if you see me, flag me down and say "hello." So, what do you think of this news, Doctor and Donna?

    Rocking In The Caprica

    http://allanhatt.blogspot.com/2008/05/rocking-in-caprica.htm...
190 days ago in Watch The World Die · Authority: 1

There's a mass skip week conspiracy going on this week as every tv show I watch is on hiatus until the forthcoming week. Even Doctor Who...a British show! * * * * * * On the Doctor Who front there was a passing of the torch this week as Russell T. Davies steps down as showrunner and Stephen Moffat takes his place. Sadly, the show is then going on hiatus until 2010 after the end of this current series. I read elsewhere, but can't find the link now, that David Tennant is sticking around through 2010 as the Doctor. Cool. Seems unlikely that he'll stick around past that but I guess that all depends on a lotta factors and, well, he's got a few years to ponder whether he wants to remain the Doctor. * * * * * * There's also news that Battlestar Galactica will get the tv movie treatment. While I likes me the BSG, I think that once the series ends I'm not gonna need/want any more back story. If there are untold tales that can't be fit into the regular series then, well, that's why there's fanfic websites and forums. Let them do their thing. (I have to mention that the "episodes" known as the Razor movie didn't fill me with the confidence that more BSG special episodes are necessary. Loved Michelle Forbes. I could watch her act circles around people all day. However, when I boiled down the relevant purpose of those episodes in relation to the current series it came down to this: Starbuck can't be trusted. And, you know, the same damn thing was repeated in the last episode that aired...so, you know, that sort of makes Razor mostly irrelevant to the series as a whole. In my humble opinion, that is.) Also in the link above it looks like the final ten episodes of BSG's final season won't air until next fucking year. What the hell? If production wraps for good sometime in June why the hell hold onto them episodes for that long? I can see holding onto them until September so they can be shaped and fully realized but beyond that...not so much. I hate to sound all fanboy but, dammit, let it end in a timely manner. I really do have fan fatigue waiting for a resolution. * * * * * * I have only one more thing left to talk about. That's right...Rock Band! (Cue Blondie's album Eat To The Beat and begin:) I've still three songs left to go on the Hard difficulty setlist and they are killing me. I've tried the song Next To You about 10 times and get slaughtered by it in and around 12% every time. I just can't get the bass drum part right. Hell, who am I kidding? I'm an old man and that song is just a tad too fast and furious for me to get. Sigh. On the good side, I ran through the entire setlist for the Medium difficulty setting yesterday and improved my score dramatically for just about every song. I was a bloody unstoppable force of rock drumming. Well, a medium unstoppable force, I suppose. Mind you, I did run through the first two tiers of songs on Hard and did improve a good handful of scores - so I was a drumming force to be reckoned with yesterday! I suspect if I play today I'm not gonna have very good results. My arms are sore and I feel worn out. Still, that doesn't mean I won't try. Heh. And this Tuesday I'm gonna be rocking out to the full debut album by The Cars. Yippee! Been waiting a long time for this to happen. * * * * * * Looks like Guitar Hero's answer to Rock Band has a shipping date of October 27, 2008. And a hefty price of $190 bucks. That price gets you the game, a guitar, drum set and a microphone. All wireless, as far as I can tell - thus the slight bump in price compared to Rock Band I'm guessing. While playing another rocking game sounds enticing I have to echo everyone else's sentiments - I really hate the idea of cluttering up my living room with more peripherals. Mind you, I have months to get sick of playing (and breaking) my Rock Band drum kit so this opinion may change. Perhaps that's where the line in the sand will be drawn between these two games...who has the best and most durable peripherals? However, I think the decision may come down to my point below: From my perspective, I've already invested heavily in Rock Band. Literally. Two drum kits (one on the sidelines waiting to replace the current one once I break it), a chunk of metal for the bass pedal to keep it from snapping in two pieces and a whole shitload of downloaded content. If I add it all up - and I hate to do so because the figure is frightening - I'm probably well over $300 bucks into this game. And by the time October rolls around I'll probably have spent/downloaded a lot more content, pushing that investment near or over $400 bucks. All for one damn game. Am I really gonna repeat that with another game? Honestly, maybe. But I'm really gonna think about it before I do. Unlike with Rock Band where I knew I was gonna get this game no matter what (well, pending good reviews so I didn't waste a lotta money). All of this, by the way, has nothing to do with the potential success of Guitar Hero World Tour. It has a built in audience and I'm pretty sure it'll do just fine. * * * * * * Before I forget...you can head over to the official Guitar Hero site and view a couple trailers about the upcoming game. The first trailer is your basic ad for the game. The second trailer has a few notable drummers talking about how great the drum kit peripheral is...without actually playing it (okay, there's about two seconds worth of Stewart Copeland hitting it but that's about it). Seriously, it's like an infomercial with celebrity endorsements. I half expected Jessica Simpson to show up at some point. Pretty disappointing effort, guys/gals. Let's see the thing in action next time. If you want us Rock Band junkies to come over to your side you're gonna have to convince us that drum kit is the shit. Just a little free advice to ponder. And that's it for me this week...
