Permalink Times Online: "Britain’s security services have identified Russia as the third most serious threat facing the country, it has emerged before Gordon Brown’s first meeting with President Medvedev." Guardian: "It is remote, frozen and inhospitable, and a long way away from Moscow. But for the past seven years Roman Abramovich - the billionaire owner of Chelsea FC - has spent his spare time and dollars in Russia's far-eastern region of Chukotka. But yesterday Abramovich stepped down from his job as Chukotka's governor. The Kremlin confirmed that the oligarch was bowing out of Russian politics, and had relinquished his task of administering one of the world's most far-flung places." Reuters: "Europe's bill for Russian gas will rise by a quarter by the end of 2008 and will eventually double, the head of Gazprom said on Thursday, repeating his view that the oil price will rise by another $100 a barrel." Reuters: "Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown may discuss the troubled Anglo-Russian oil venture TNK-BP on the sidelines of next week's G8 summit, a Russian official said on Thursday." The Other Russia: "Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has slashed the number of foreign non-profit organizations eligible for tax benefits on grants. As the Kommersant newspaper reports, a list of 101 privately-funded organizations has been whittled down to only 12 groups. The resolution may mean fewer grants and programs in Russia, and may force some organizations to close their offices entirely." PR-Inside: "Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has fired the nation's envoy to the European Court of Human Rights, which has ruled against Russia in numerous recent lawsuits, the Kremlin said Thursday. Medvedev's order to dismiss Veronika Milinchuk was announced on the day when the Strasbourg-based court again ordered Russia to pay compensation to several Chechens." International Herald Tribune: "The Russian government sought Thursday to make Bank of New York Mellon liable under U.S. racketeering laws for $22.5 billion in damages arising from a money-laundering scandal that helped undermine the Russian economy in the late 1990s." Daily Yomiuri: "Russian President Dmitry Medvedev indicated Russia and Japan could reach an agreement over disputed islands off eastern Hokkaido, it has been learned." GamesBid.com: "Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Thursday called for controversial Olympic facilities planned for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games to be relocated saying ecological concerns were more important than expense, according to Russian news agencies."
