Giants beat Rockies 3-2, plus all those empty seats

    http://blogs.mercurynews.com/giants/2008/04/30/giants-beat-r...

When Aaron Rowand’s home run cleared the fence in left-center field Wednesday afternoon, did anyone notice how many empty seats there were? (Here’s the video.) As the ball rattled around untouched for a few seconds and fans in the bleachers scrambled toward the ball, it made me think of the really old days at a nearly desolate Candlestick Park when a few kids sprinted along the left field fence to fetch home run balls. Of course, it’s not as bad as the days when the Giants were lucky to draw 12,000 on a freezing weekday night at the ‘Stick. The Giants sold about 25,000 season tickets this year and still expect to draw 3 million fans, the ninth straight time they will do so since Pac Bell/SBC/AT&T Park opened. And according to Major League Baseball, national attendance this year is up 2.6 percent, despite the tough economy. Nevertheless, it sure seems like a lot of Giants’ season ticket holders are staying home, and if they can’t sell or give away their tickets, they’re just letting them go to waste. In my section along the first base side, which is full of season ticket holders, I’ve noticed that one-third to one-half of the tickets go unused for any given game. The empty seats are not surprising, considering the lowered expectations of the team, Barry Bonds’ departure, and the fact that the ballpark, although still beautiful, isn’t the draw it once was. And to be fair, 30,000 to 35,000 fans is still pretty good when the ballpark holds about 42,000. But this year, when I sit there at the ballpark and it’s emptier than years past, it’s still a bit of a shock. From my vantage point, whole sections in the upper deck on the third base side are practically empty for some games. I know it’s hard to tell with all the people roaming around inside the stadium or in the Arcade. But when the official attendance is 30,000 to 32,000 (based on the number of tickets sold), I swear it’s closer to 20,000 who’ve actually shown up to some of the games. So, are you going to fewer games this year? And if so, why? Bad team? No Bonds? The inflated beer prices? The $30 it takes to park your car? Or the fact that you can see nearly all the games for free on TV? All I know is: The poor person who bought last Sunday’s game from me (two tickets and a parking pass at face value) only to see Barry Zito self-destruct for eight runs in three innings must have felt gypped.
