http://www.theleftcoaster.com/archives/012580.phpby Mary So Honda is now committed to making their Electric-Gas Hybrid vehicles more readily available. In fact, one news report says that they are planning to make their hybrids affordable (only $1900 more than the gas engine model on some models). Yet, it seems to me that both Honda and Toyota are just playing around in their declarations of going green. If they were truly serious about this topic, they would be working very hard to get a hybrid model to those biggest growing markets: China and India) and making sure they provided the most energy efficient and lowest carbon emitting mode possible. Highly efficient, affordable cars would go a long ways to helping China and India solve some of its modern day problems. Your turn now. Mary

More hybrids
http://1co2.com/2008/05/22/more-hybrids/More hybrids May 22nd, 2008 MSBNC on coming Hybrids I’m glad to see more hybrid cars in the near future. The impact of switching quickly away from gas guzzlers to more efficient vehicles is something that needed to be done. The useless delaying tactics by the big 3 automakers is impacting them harder than they expected 5 years ago. The nonsense of saying “we’re making other alternate vehicles, so we shouldn’t worry about hybrids or miles per gallon numbers.” The current cost at the pump is pushing consumers to buy more fuel efficient cars. What else can you say when a GEO metro sells on ebay for more than bluebook value? Or that the gas sippers from the 80’s and 90’s are looked on with desire, instead of distain for rolling gas tanks? Honda hybrids may be nightmare for Detroit
http://www.narbosa.com/2008/05/honda-hybrids-may-be-nightmar...Nation: If they can keep the price under 2000 bucks over comparable cars and great mpg over comparable cars, then I am interested. Honda Motor Co. is coming out with hybrid cars starting early next year that will cost about $1,900 more than comparable gas-only models. The cost for the Detroit Three, according to industry analysts, could be lower market share as U.S. consumers continue their rapid shift to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Analysts say the new hybrids, including a gas-electric hybrid-only model to fight the popular Toyota Prius and a hybrid version of the subcompact Fit, will hit the market at the right time with gasoline prices continuing to rise. "It's a game-changer for the short term if they can get the products in the marketplace in the next couple of years before the domestics can come up with a significant volume of products that get high mileage," said Jesse Toprak, chief industry analyst for the auto information site Edmunds.com. Honda, which already has the most fuel-efficient lineup in the U.S., announced Wednesday that it will sell the new hybrid-only car in the U.S., Japan and Europe starting in early 2009. It has not determined yet where the Fit will be sold. The new models are a key part of Honda's strategy for the next three years that President Takeo Fukui outlined at Honda's Tokyo headquarters.

Honda Hybrids
http://www.benbuck.net/blog/2008/05/honda-hybrids.htmlThe Detroit auto industry has fought for years against higher CAFE (fuel efficiency) standards, against electric cars, and for ridiculous cars like Hummers. Now the chickens are coming home to roost, with Honda improving its gas-electric hybrid lineup along with Toyota, leaving American auto makers in the dust.

When Will They Ever Learn
http://www.pacificviews.org/weblog/archives/003497.htmlEvery time I read an article like this one, I get completely disgusted. This is the country whose plutocrats bleat about market pressure, and yet the auto industry not only is impervious to engineering and safety improvements without legislative coercion, they cannot even see fit to re-tool and downsize vehicles when that is what the market is clearly turning toward. Honda hybrids a nightmare? No, the nightmare is Ford F350 behemoths, Chevy monsters that take 12 passengers, Suburbans -- nightmares are Hummers and Escalades. The fact that these are becoming lot decorations instead of viable merchandise is rather natural, all things considered. This happened once before, during the end of the first incarnation of the VW Beetle. It was the time of the first wave of imported Japanese cars -- no surprise there. And as they succeeded, eventually US auto makers caught on. Cars were suddenly getting smaller and smaller as the big muscle cars lost favor during the 1970's gas problems. It's now time for the huge beasts to get off the road, the wasteful machines that were engineered with no thought of fuel economy of any sort. Let's hope that this time single digit miles per gallon cars go away for good.
