Voting: Not Just For All-Star Games

    http://gapersblock.com/tailgate/2008/09/voting-isnt-just-for...

Voting: Not Just For All-Star Games Amidst the heart-pounding stories of untimely injuries (like that of Carlos Quintin), panic-inducing losing streaks (five and counting for the Cubs?) and too-close-for-comfort pennant races, there is a bigger question that looms for Chicago baseball fans: whom to vote for. No, we're not talking about next year's All-Star game. That's a little too "wait'll next year" even for baseball fans. We're talking about THE election, the big one, the biggest "sporting event" in the country. The race for president. Surprised that hardcore baseball fans in Chicago, who are engaged in nail-biting division races on both sides of town, would have time to contemplate things like budget deficits and tax gains? Well, if a presidential candidate can find time to discuss baseball, then it's only fair that a die-hard White Sox fan places the race for the White House in baseball terms. - Ken Green

    Bold Predictions: Combat Evolved Edition

    http://www.sox35th.com/index.php/152/bold-predictions-combat...

[Editor’s note: This was prepared before today’s news became public. Oh, irony!] Three things to watch for as two likely playoff teams enter the Octagon this weekend: The ressurection of White Sox offense. If Paul Konerko and Jim Thome continue to hit, the 3-6 of Carlos Quentin, Jim Thome, Jermaine Dye, and Konerko could be more than enough to put the Good Guys into serious contention (as opposed to the someone’s-got-to-win-those-thing contention they’re in now). Starting pitching will determine this team’s fate, but the bats are going to have their work cut out for them this weekend and through next Thursday. See? Freak injuries help always help at least someone. Pretty good Angels pitcher Jered Weaver cut himself badly enough ealier this week to spare the Sox his lifetime 3-0, 0.46 ERA record at Comiskey. You have to feel bad for a team that loses a pivotal piece to such a random accident, but these things happen. Get better in time to destroy the Cubs, Jered! A hero will rise. Last time the Sox and Angels were nationally televised, ESPN helped the nation witness Carlos Quentin hit a walk-off home run off of ace John Lackey to foil his bid for the complete game, the win, and the sweep. This Sunday, the also-pretty-good Joe Saunders gets the nod for the Halos on TBS. Think big, friends. Think big. [Editor’s note II: We’ll discuss today’s happenings more tomorrow once we (a) let the facts bubble up from beneath the surface (b) let it all sink in and (c) hope for the best here at the dawn of the Dewayne Wise Era.]

Carlos Quentin out for season with fractured wrist

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Carlos...

Carlos Quentin out for season with fractured wrist By 'Duk UPDATE: It's official. Dustin Pedroia and K-Rod, dust off those MVP resumes, will ya? You're one Justin Morneau down-the-stretch slump from duking it out. UPDATE #2: The White Sox are saying Quentin will have surgery and then be re-evaluated in 2-3 weeks. He broke it after hitting his own bat. I'm not sure where this ranks on the irony scale, but one of the only players holding the White Sox back from becoming a full-fledged creaky AARP-card carrying member may now be done for the year. According to both WSCR and the Sun-Times, quiet MVP candidate Carlos Quentin has a fractured right wrist and will need season-ending surgery. Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus has more: WSCR in Chicago is reporting that Carlos Quentin has a broken wrist and is done for the season. I have been unable to confirm the specifics, but there is more going on than I was led to believe yesterday. Just last evening, I spoke with a trusted source who told me that he expected Quentin to be back in the lineup today, as you'll see in Friday's UTK Wrap. Now, that is no longer the case. Quentin returned from scans on his injured arm with a cast or brace and an announcement is expected before game time with more details. The White Sox currently hold a 1.5-game lead over Minnesota in the AL Central, but if a news release is capable of actually erasing an advantage in the standings, I think this would qualify. Perhaps those thoughts of a Crosstown World Series were just too good to be true.
