Keep Changes Small
http://www.refrigeratorraid.com/2008/10/keep-changes-small.h...Making a huge, sweeping lifestyle change--like starting the Atkins diet or running 10 miles a day--may get you into a skinnier pair of jeans. However, these types of drastic changes are difficult to sustain for the long-term (and aren't always the healthiest way to approach weight loss). Fortunately, health experts have concluded that even small changes can be enough to create a significant change in our health. A recent USA Today article summarized three major studies that found little diet tricks can get big results. Here are a few of my favorite diet "tricks": * Soup. When I'm feeling super hungry, I start my meal with a cup of broth-based soup. (I make a big batch and then freeze single-serve containers so I always have some handy.) It's a great way to get extra veggies. And by the time I finish the soup, my hunger is often quelled. * Cucumber slices. Sometimes I just need a crunch with a sandwich. Rather than resorting to high-calorie chips or pretzels, I opt for cucumber slices or baby carrots. They give me that same satisfying crunch without the fat or refined carbohydrates. * Grilling. The charcoal grill imparts a flavor on veggies and fish that can't be duplicated elsewhere. I often ask Mr. Raider to grill me up some salmon fillets--even in the dead of winter!--which I can use as a main course, sandwich filling or salad topper. With its tasty grilled flavor, I can beat any craving for fried fish. * Ditching yolks. Egg whites just don't have the taste of yolks--plus the yolks contain many healthy nutrients. To get the best yolks have to offer without overdoing the fat and cholesterol, I often scramble three egg whites and one egg yolk. It's the perfect way to get plenty of taste but keep the calories low. These aren't huge changes, but they do make a difference in my overall calorie consumption.
