More Same-sex marriage

That's a great victory for equality. While opponents will decry the changes such a decision will have on the institution of marriage, few have pondered what such a decision will mean for gay and lesbian culture. I think we'll see two changes, one's a fad - gays are good at that - the other, a true shift in gay culture. Between May 15 and Nov. 3, it will be possible for anyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, to get married in California. This summer, gays and lesbians will be coming to California to gain legal recognition of their relationships just as they did on Valentine's weekend 2004 when San Francisco issued same-sex marriage licenses. And like that romantic weekend getaway, they had better make plans fast-- 5/18/2008 If "to the pure all things are pure" and "all things are lawful unto me," and if, under this Law of grace and Love, extramarital sex and all of these other things are lawful, then where do things like sodomy fit in? If you are truly pure and loving, you wouldn't do such things, because they're definitely not good for you physically or spiritually, and they're hurtful. Just because "all things are lawful" unto us doesn't mean that we can go around murdering or killing or torturing people OR GIVING THEM AIDS! That's not love! Carl Costas / ccostas@sacbee.com Click on photo to enlarge See additional images Carol Corrigan is like a lot of Californians. She thinks same-sex couples deserve the same rights as heterosexual partners who marry, and she supports the domestic-partner laws that gave gays most of those rights. If she were asked to vote on the issue of gay marriage on the ballot, Corrigan says, she would probably choose to legalize it. But she did not think it was the place of the California Supreme Court to fast-forward the political process.Corrigan's conflicting viewsmay reflect the emerging mainstream in California right now. But Corrigan is not simply any Californian. She is a justice on the state Supreme Court, its newest member. She was in the minority in the court's 4-3 ruling last week striking down the state's prohibition on same-sex marriage. If that ruling stands and is one day viewed as the historic turning point in the campaign for gay rights, not only in California but across the nation, Corrigan's dissenting opinion will be little noted by history But if Californians vote in November to restore the ban on gay marriage with a constitutional amendment overturning the court's controversial ruling, then the advocates for gay marriage who are celebrating today might well look back at Corrigan's views as prescient."We are in the midst of a major social change," Corrigan wrote in her dissent. My favorite quotes from the gay marriage news coverage
http://nobodypasses.blogspot.com/2008/05/my-favorite-quotes-...From Kris Hill, after making an appointment to marry her partner Karen Stodghill on June 16 at City Hall in San Francisco: "It's like we're not second class citizens in California anymore... It's like we get to drink at the same water fountain now." (San Francisco Chronicle) Hmm... I wonder what water fountain they were drinking at before. Also from the Chronicle, in an op-ed by Scott Olin Schmidt, proclaiming "Biggest shift in gay culture since Stonewall": "Now we just need someone to marry!" one friend messaged me, pretty much summing up the conundrum facing gays and lesbians over the next six months… Until today, there has been no archetypical relationship for gays and lesbians across America. Nothing to look at and say "That's what I want." Only in tiny Massachusetts could a gay man like me even think about getting married and then consider with whom to form that union. This lack of a model or structure for legal, recognized partnerships created the impression that promiscuity was the norm for the gay community. And, I would argue, contributed to the spread of AIDS and other plagues on the gay community. But today, all that has changed. Now, that's a new argument -- Let's repeat this sentence: “This lack of a model or structure for legal, recognized partnerships created the impression that promiscuity was the norm for the gay community.” Okay, so the impression that promiscuity was the norm contributed to the spread of AIDS “and other plagues.” I guess, because, you know, all those slutty gays just wanted to imitate the norm. But I'm still curious about the mysterious phrase, "and other plagues." Is this the Middle Ages? I mean, marriage certainly helped to halt the spread of plagues then.

Airport Hell Payback
http://boifromtroy.com/?p=7251Airport Hell Payback May 16th, 2008 So consider this… Yesterday morning, I turn over and it is 5:30AM, my alarm had gone off for a full half hour before I noticed it, thanks to a certain someone who did not honor his commitment to have me in bed before 10 o’clock the night before. I hurry, get ready, and have the car take me to LAX where I check in, and learn that first, I would not be on the new Business Class 747 between Washington and Frankfurt and that the LAX to Washington flight was delayed to a 9 AM “decision”. United told me the only option was for me to take the 5:35 flight to Frankfurt, then connect to Paris from there. I got online, found a better option, connecting through London and Frankfurt but getting me into Paris three hours earlier…or so I thought. That gave me enough time to learn of the California Supreme Court’s ruling and draft up a reaction for Spot-On.com, which I posted here yesterday…whilst sipping on the free champagne offered me at the Red Carpet Club since LAX had become my transoceanic gateway airport after switching to the London flight. The new 1 PM departure of United’s LAX-LHR nonstop is ill-conceived. You get on the plane, eat lunch, then…do what for eleven hours? I got to bed around 9 PM Los Angeles time, which was, oh, about an hour before breakfast service. Seeing the long lines for the transfer center, I used my pink fast track to clear immigration, have a fag, and run across the tube connector to get to Lufthansa in Terminal 2, where I actually beat a fellow traveler from the United L.A. flight who had taken the traditional transfer center route. Then our flight for delayed because Lufthansa’s catering department is having troubles at Frankfurt. They moved buildings and now lost all the data on which flights get which meals, so none were being served. Ground staff had to go to the Senator Lounge to scrounge up water, orange juice and soda crackers to serve on the plane, causing a 30 minute delay. That 30 minute delay, of course, caused me to miss my connection to Paris, and with a large group of japanese tourists on the 3:50 flight, I ended up getting to Paris on the same schedule as I would have had I waited all day at LAX. Ugh. But I will get an extra segment! Too bad I have already requalified for 1K today with all those bonus miles from being rebooked as a “full fare” passenger. Funnily, while I am on aeroplanes all day, somehow, this manages to appear in the San Francisco Chronicle. Thank goodness I did not name names!
