End of the world on Wednesday

Last month, the European Court of Human Rights rejected a baseless complaint by a bunch of Luddite morons against the launch of the Large Hadron Collider. The fear that the soon-to-begin experiment will result in "black holes that could suck up the Earth" is not exactly something to lose sleep over, but tell that to this idiot (or these clowns). Here is Ian Sample for The Guardian on the God machine countdown. More from Cosmic Log, here and here. Scientists involved in the experiment have, inevitably, received death threats (those responsible should be found and thrown in a deep hole, preferably a black one). What exactly are the benefits of this experiment? BBC explains what the Large Hadron Collider really is. Leo Hickman wonders if last weekend was his, well, last weekend. Martin Rees applauds the greatest experiment in history. And the whole thing can be watched live on Wednesday, here.

What if the world ends on Wednesday?

    http://simkiott001.blogspot.com/2008/09/what-if-world-ends-o...

I have read several musings on the meaning of the end of the world, inspired by the uninformed but "authoritative" talk about the LHC spelling doom for Earth. This one (in wonderful British style) is a particularly good one. Of course, the world is NOT going to end on Wednesday. CERN is not planning to do anything that hasn't been done at Fermilab already. In fact, we only plan to circulate (not collide) protons at 450 GeV. The Tevatron at Fermilab circulates and COLLIDES protons and (argh!) anti-protons at 980 GeV, and the world (as far as we know it) is still in tact. But what if this is all some Matrix-like dream? Or a Dallas-like dream season ("Blast From The Past")? What if the world ended already? What if the world only BEGAN an instant ago and all of your memories, in addition to the dinosaur bones in China and Colorado, had been planted there by a fun-loving and creative super-being?

The funny ensues. LDV/Stephen Tall reports on Michael Portillo lending some weight to Local Income Tax…just…uh…don’t mention that it’s been a Lib Dem policy for years. Ok? Chicken Yoghurt muses on the idea of Jeremy Kyle’s involvement at a higher political level than unemployment TV. LDV/Mark Park wonders why Yougov attracts a different political standard of women respondents. More to the point, does this make Yougov more or less accurate? Neil Williams joins in on the hate on EA for their free petrol give-away stunt. Given the main complaints were from residents that couldn’t even get out of their driveways, shouldn’t irresponsible driving also take some of the blame though? CiF/Leo Hickman waits for the end of the world, nice knowing you all. Destructoid reports about a pair of teenagers banned from owning pets and playing video games because they microwaved their cat. Now what are they meant to do to pass the time? My vote is on terrorism.
