Job cuts coming at Thomson Reuters
http://weblogs.jomc.unc.edu/talkingbiznews/?p=4902James Robinson of The Observer in London reports that the newly merged Thomson Reuters has confirmed in an internal e-mail that job cuts are looming. Robinson writes, “The email, seen by MediaGuardian.co.uk and sent to senior managers by Devin Wenig, the chief executive of Thomson Reuters’ markets division, which includes its 2,600-strong global news operation, said that the precise scale of the cuts will be outlined ‘over the next several days’. “In the email, Wenig, who was a Reuters board member and its chief operating officer prior to the merger, wrote: ‘It’s no secret that a significant amount of thought and planning has been dedicated to eliminating duplication and generating savings within our business. Over the next several days, we will communicate department by department the impact of our integration … these actions will mean an immediate reduction in our headcount.’ “Wenig’s email added: ‘The jobs that are impacted are largely the result of duplication between the two organisations.’ The email said that most job losses would be completed by the end of the year, but went on to say that further cuts could be made if management decided to close certain products down completely.” Read more here.

Eliot Spitzer, out of the picture, labor unions are flexing their muscles in Albany. The Post slams Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno and his fellow Republicans for "pretending" to be fiscally conservative while supporting costly union-backed measures. The state Commission on Judicial Conduct received a record number of complaints about judges last year. The woman who booked Spitzer's hooker has pleaded guilty and agreed to tell a grand jury everything. This could be bad news, legally speaking, for the former governor. The prostitute who brought down Spitzer, Ashley Alexandra Dupre, was spotted at the Port Authority bus terminal. At least one Democrat is amazed Spitzer is choosing to refund campaign contributions. Gov. David Paterson is holding off doling out the $30 million worth of pork he controls. Paterson called US Sen. Chuck Schumer's call for the Port Authority to take over the Moynihan Station project "a good idea." Paterson signed a bill requiring registered sex offenders to disclose their screen names to social networking sites to protect under-age users. Mayor Bloomberg insisted he wasn't hiding the fact that he handed out discretionary funds to a select group of Council members. The Post calls Bloomberg's member items "bad public policy." The DN wants the mayor to give up his pork along with the Council. Councilman David Weprin, an '09 comptroller candidate, has received thousands of dollars worth of campaign contributions from people affiliated with organizations to which he directed member items. As expected, the Council overrode Bloomberg's veto of the e-waste recycling bill. A SUNY search committee has narrowed its list of potential chancellor candidates. Legislation to address the foreclosure crisis is stalled in the GOP-controlled Senate. The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle approves of Paterson's proposals to protect patients. Paterson again tried to quell anger over his decision to do away with the position of upstate economic development czar. New York magazine mistook a Democratic congressman for scandal-scarred Rep. Vito Fossella. Fossella skipped a meeting in Washington with members of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce. Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi named a registered Conservative and former political opponent to the district court bench. Bruno has tapped a Capital District developer (and major campaign contributor) and the husband of socialite Marylou Whitney to serve on NYRA's board. A Republican businessman has decided to challenge freshman Democratic Rep. Mike Arcuri in the 24th CD. Thomson Reuters is the latest news organization to eye job cuts. John McCain finally hit the 80 percent mark in a GOP primary (in Nebraska). McCain's wife has sold off at least $2 million worth of funds with investments in Sudan.
