    BDA Sandwiched With Mayo?

    http://www.sportsagentblog.com/?p=1214

Honestly, the day I leave for a ten day trip to Israel, this happens? Anyone who knows me well, understands that I hate white foods (vanilla not included). I am not a fan of sour cream, despise cottage cheese, and refuse to intake any mayonnaise. I never had anything against one type of mayo, O.J. Mayo, and I still am not sure that he should take the major blame in what has occurred. I’ll let you make up your own mind in deciding who is in the wrong in this situation. Immediately, we know that BDA Sports and Calvin Andrews will be hurt by what has transpired. Mayo has dropped BDA and is currently in the process of looking for new representation. Early word is that the finalists for winning the job of representing Mayo are Leon Rose and Andy Miller. It should only be a matter of time until we find out who will win the battle, with the NBA Draft quickly approaching. If Worldwide Wes is involved, then my prediction is that Leon Rose is the more likely suitor to win. But what about BDA, Bill Duffy, and Calvin Andrews? The NBPA recently suggested that it will start to enforce some of its regulations. If it is found that BDA and/or Calvin Andrews acting in his role as an employee of BDA knowingly/recklessly/negligently supplied funds to a runner/handler who then passed them onto Mayo, the BDA employees and the company may be at risk of a penalty. That penalty may come in the form of a monetary fine or even a temporary suspension from representing clients. At the end of 2005, NFL agent David Dunn was suspended by the NFLPA for eighteen months for trying to steal clients from his former partner, Leigh Steinberg. The NBPA may need to take similar action if it truly wishes to rid itself of an issue that drastically needs to be approached. In fact, the state of California may have a suit ready against BDA based on its Miller-Ayala Act (regulatory legislation in Cali instead of the UAAA). In the wake of the recent interview with David Falk, discussing the price it costs an agent to approach a player, the NBA is in a dire need to reverse its negative image. Corruption seems to be running rampant in a league that already has a tough burden of proving its value and strength based on lower-than-desired ratings and a thug mentality stereotype. Is it too much of a stretch to think that Lon Babby Bill Duffy, Calvin Andrews, and/or BDA may be suspended by the NBPA or receive a heavy penalty from the state of California if found to have indirectly contributed money to an NCAA student athlete? I can only imagine what the ongoing investigations into this controversy must look like. I will let that settle itself out and not predict its outcome. One thing we know is that top legal counsel for the NBPA who appears to have acted as an attorney for BDA in the past, Gary Hall, will not have any part in sorting this all out. But what about O.J.? It seems like his draft stock will not be hurt. If he is anything like what Michael Wilbon describes him as, then this story really shouldn’t affect his value. “He was the nicest, sweetest kid you could hope to meet. Said hello and then hugged me, even though he’d seen me call him a ‘punk’ on television. He was polite, engaging, answered every question with ‘Yes, sir’ or ‘No, sir.’ He said: ‘I would just love for you to spend some time with me, just talking. . . . Could I have your card and just be able to call or talk to you? I’ve got the pre-draft camp [in Chicago] coming up, a whole new world.’” The fact that O.J. may have taken some money from a handler does not invalidate the fact that he displays strong character. And it definitely does not diminish his game in any way. So, Mr. Mayo, if you are still looking for an agent and have not yet limited your choices to Miller and Rose as suggested, then give me a call. I promise that you will not have to go through my non-existent secretary. A Shabbat Shalom: Memorial Day Weekend Wrap-Up will be coming to you shortly. I still have a bunch of stories to get through.

    Buzzer Beaters - 05/19

This weeks Buzzer Beaters has the scoop on what Raptors scout Masai Uruji was doing Nigeria, what players go through in pre-draft workouts, an interview with the fans who created the now famous Eva Longoria poster, details on the O.J. Mayo situation as well as a ton of other articles to make sure you know all the latest basketball news from the past week. * Doug Smith on The Star had a great article about Raptors scout Masai Ujiri taking part in basketball development in Nigeria. * Speaking of international hoops, Alex Johnson has a great article about basketball in Croatia. * One of the best writers on the ‘Net is Mike Moreau and he proved it with his latest article for HOOPSWORLD called Preparing for the Pre-Draft. Moreau helps college and international players prepare for pre-draft workouts and he provides readers with a glimpse into the kind of things he does with his clients. * There’s a controversy brewing in Lawrence, Kansas over some results from a math test Darrell Arthur wrote in high school and it could effect his college eligability. * Michael Wilbon did a great job of breaking down the O.J. Mayo situation. * The NY Daily News is reporting that David Lee’s time in New York could be done because new head coach Mike D’Antoni likes big men who can shoot from anywhere on the court. If Bryan Colangelo could work out a deal to get Lee in Toronto it would be a pure stroke of genius because it would do wonders to help cure the Raptors rebounding problems. * Speaking of the Knicks, Adrian Wojnarowski is worried the Big Apple could take a big bite out of D’Antoni. * Nicola Olic from HOOPSWORLD was able to secure an interview with the two fans in New Orleans who brought the lifesize poster of Eva Longoria to Game 5 which distracted Tony Parker while he was shooting two crucial free throws. * Adam from Section F Sports feels Utah was ousted from the playoffs because Carlos Boozer can’t play above the rim. * Rasho Nesterovic exercised his option and will not become a free agent this summer. * Matt from Hardwood Paroxysm started a new hoops blog called Ridiculous Upside. * Dan LeBatard is on sabbatical from the Miami Herald so he stopped by The Big Lead to write a guest column. Need some new tracks for your iPod? * Honey Soul Music has new stuff from Idle Warship, Busta Rhymes, Jean Grae and Aliwud. * 2 Dope Boyz had a great blast from the past with From Da’ Bricks Pete Rock Mix. * Trap-A-Holics has a great mixtape called Jigga vs Hova. * Jean Grae has a great remix of “Love Thirst” with Busta Rhymes. * We Do It Right posted links for two new tracks by The Cool Kids. * Mickey Factz uses a Lauryn Hill beat for his new song Live Water.

Aw, man! Why don't I get the call, man? We just can't help ourselves. It is just too fun (and too easy) to make fun of Fat Boy Pee Pee. The bloated loser who calls himself The Truth must face the facts. The Truth is he has been awful this playoff series. He is barely hitting 40 percent of his shots. Only averaging 17 points per game. And has managed to average 3 turnovers a game. His numbers in game 6 Friday night? The game that could have closed out the series against the Cavs? He was 5-15 from the floor with 6 (we said SIX!) turnovers. Of course, it is almost a mortal lock that Pierce and the Celtics will win game seven today (at home of course). But until then, we can have some more fun at the expense of the gang banger wannabe.kAs for game seven? Celts by double digits.k The Links k Should we feel sorry for O.J. Wilbon Comes Around

    http://www.conquestchronicles.com/2008/5/17/519465/wilbon-co...

Then he becomes an enabler. Not that it really matters... When Michael Wilbon ripped OJ Mayo last year on PTI calling him a "punk" I was pretty stunned. Of all the people in the media who understand about growing up in difficult situations Wilbon was the last person I thought who would attack this kid. The whole circumstance surrounding Mayo's so-called "recruitment" of USC certainly raised some eyebrows. I was one of those that was leery of this whole situation but I also admit that the kid won me over with his demeanor and respect towards others. That doesn't excuse Mayo if the allegations that have come out are true but outside of that he proven everyone wrong in how he was portrayed. Wilbon has let the pendulum swing all the way over to the other side with his column on Wednesday. One year after being pointedly critical of Mayo for bumping a referee in a game and for basically telling Floyd what would be happening with his basketball team, I met Mayo last Wednesday night at a Lakers-Jazz playoff game. He was the nicest, sweetest kid you could hope to meet. Said hello and then hugged me, even though he'd seen me call him a "punk" on television. He was polite, engaging, answered every question with "Yes, sir" or "No, sir." He said: "I would just love for you to spend some time with me, just talking. . . . Could I have your card and just be able to call or talk to you? I've got the pre-draft camp [in Chicago] coming up, a whole new world." I realized instantly I was wrong for attacking Mayo the way I had. Thats fine, but if Wilbon had done a little due diligence before he made those remarks he wouldn't look like such an ass. I like Wilbon's work for the most part but he was way of base in characterization of Mayo. But Wilbon does Mayo another disservice early on in the piece. If I'm 14 years old and poor, I'm accepting money as long as I don't have to do anything illegal. If I'm 14 years old and poor and everybody around me is making money off my athletic talent, and somebody tells me that I, too, can share in the wealth, I'm taking the money. So as long as it isn't illegal its OK? That's part of the problem, justifying Mayo's taking the money because he is poor only lets the vicious cycle continue. It also furthers the notion that players are coddled and the more coddled they are the greater the sense of entitlement they have that they can do no wrong. By justifying that it's OK Wilbon basically gives the OK for these predators to hang around potentially ruing the se kids lives. There are laws on the books in a number of states about tampering with amateur athletes, its time that those states enforced those laws to at least try and ensure that there are penalties for this type of behavior.

#1 Must Read, Drop Everything Link Of The Day O.J. Mayo's hometown paper lends some real perspective on the life of this young man, pointing out the treacherous road he's traveled. [Herald-Dispatch]#1a: Michael Wilbon concurs. [Washington Post] Good News Everything is done with the USC-Coliseum deal. The one surprise? Everybody's happy. [LA Times] Commencement is today, and Keith Rivers is reminiscing on his blog. FYI, Disney chief Robert Iger is this year's speaker. [Yardbarker] The USC coaches tour (Pete Carroll, Tim Floyd) starts May 28th. [USC] Sedrick Ellis is adjusting to life in New Orleans. [Scout] Regardless of what happens with USC, O.J. Mayo's high school team would not have to face any penalties. [ESPN] Willie McGinest is staying in the NFL one more year because the Browns look like a contender. [ESPN] Women's hoops landed a second top-40 recruit, who sent the school her decision with a funny photo. [ESPN] Somebody's already trying to predict the bowl games. [Scout] Bad News Lofa Tatupu apologized for his recent arrest. You have to wonder why the $42-million-man was driving Hyundai. [Seattle Times] Former USC swimmer Erik Vendt was surprised by a lawsuit over his swimsuit. [LA Times] No surprise, the NCAA has contacted Louis Johnson. [LA Times] Ugly News Menelaus (I presume named after the king of Greece who fought Troy) has compiled a lengthy list of allegations against USC. The comment section gets a little spicy, and it was picked up by Deadspin. [Bruins Nation]

    MORNING ROUNDUP - 05/15/08

    http://www.thirtyfiveseconds.com/2008/05/15/morning-roundup-...

The daily spin through the day’s top stories - got something we should cover? Email us at thirtyfiveseconds[at]yahoo[dot]com. THE STORY EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT Shark Week Continues Privately, we hoped that in our day off (done with school woot!), the O.J. Mayo mess would calm down, and some other story would take over the headlines. We weren’t alone - in a small act of sanity, Ben Taylor at the Daily Bruin says, “Um, don’t all of you have anything better to cover, like college athletes dying in practice?” NO! Silly us. Each minute factual revelation merely served to throw more chum in the water, which inevitably leads to nastiness. Not so much NSFW as not safe for life or soul. On Tuesday, the attacks centered on Mayo and the USC leadership. As the story ages however, like a fine wine, more subtle variables gain strength to create layers of flavor for the well-heeled to snoot about. Signal to Noise points out that USC may pay a price in recruiting long before sanctions come down. His local paper says Mayo has daddy issues (like any good southern boy). Wilbon says Mayo is a sweet kid caught up in the dirty system of agents. DeCourcy over at the SN goes a step further and says the entire sport of basketball is broken. (Though DeCourcy’s piece is less “subtle flavor brought out by age” and more “what happens when you toss the bottle against the wall in disgust, because the world is death.” Let it all out, Mike. Why, oh why did Celeste leave you and take both le chat and all the zigerettes?) But at least O.J. and his former compadres won’t lose a high school title over this mess. We’ve been asked our opinion, but we don’t view this as a forum for our “take” - we offer commentary only to be funny or make a valid point, and we’re so sick of this topic we’re not sure we can do either. We’ll try better tomorrow. We now move onto to non-O.J. topics - but first, twins. We didn’t say which twins. God, how did anyone get laid in the ’80s? (Right - cocaine.) FOUR STORIES WORTH ONE LINE APIECE Terrapin Player Struggles to Make the Grade - We’re normally above mocking the academic struggles of athletes, but since it’s Maryland, home of the waiting-to-happen academic suspension, we let out a hearty Muntz-esque “ha-ha.” It’s Possible, Since We Haven’t Heard of Any of Them - Bleacher Report lists their five players poised for a breakout season. Insofar as it means anything, good on them - Coaching contract extensions have become meaningless pats on the back since either party can break them seemingly at will, but Clemson wins points anyway for extending Oliver Purnell. Need to stop reading … going to start liking him … - Dickie V is throwing his usual V Foundation fundraiser in Florida, which regularly raises more than $1 million - but this year, he’s dedicating the ceremony to the memory of a little girl who died of cancer. We swear, we aren’t usually this emotional, it’s just lack of sleep … need something manly to make up for this … That’s better.
