A while back, DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist came through Seattle together on what they called “The Hard Sell Tour.” If you missed it, fear not. Pitchfork leads the way to the DVD release of The Hard Sell at the Hollywood Bowl. It includes the whole live show plus a lot of behind the scenes footage and all that other cool stuff. Here’s a little taste: PETA supported duo, Mates of State, have a fifth full length record coming out May of this year. Husband and wife team of Kori Gardener and Jason Hammel are calling this one Re-Arrange Us. According to Spaceland it’s going to have a cover you can — you guessed it — re-arrange into eight different combinations. Apparently, their sound this time is rearranged with less organ and more different sounds than we’re used to. Feel free to check them out at this year’s Sasquatch Music Festival on May 25th, just down I-90 at the Gorge. Here’s the track list: Get Better Now My Only Offer The Re-Arranger Jigsaw Blue and Gold Print Help Help You Are Freev Great Dane Lullaby Haze Last week, I mentioned that Quincey Jones had received a doctorate from the UW. This isn’t such a rare occurrence, it seems. Nick Cave (The Bad Seeds and Grinderman) has just received his own degree, which Drowned In Sound is calling his “Doctorama” in reference to the 2003 Bad Seeds album, Nocturama. Caulfield Campus of Monash University has awarded Mr. Cave with an honorary title, Doctor of Laws. Well done, Nick, well done. And did anyone happen to catch the Stephen Malkmus interview on Fox News? It was on the late night show Red Eye on Fox News Saturday night. If you taped it get it up on Youtube, the rest of us want to see. Thanks Matablog for the screen shot: Nine Inch Nails (and Radiohead and Wilco for that matter) has been hinted at headlining Lollapalooza 2008. They recently announced a summer tour with a funny little gap in their itinerary, right around the beginning of August where they will be pretty darn close to Chicago already. Could the rumors be true? If so, what are we to think about the Radiohead and Wilco part? We’ll find out April 7th, when the line up for Lollapalooza is officially released. Anti- Records artist Jolie Holland will be playing weekly this April in Brooklyn, NY. Says Anti-: “Shows on April 16th, 23rd and 30th will contain both material from earlier lauded albums Catalpa, Escondida and Springtime Can Kill You, as well as material from her yet-untitled release, due out later this year. On the 30th, Holland will be accompanied by guitarist Marc Ribot, acclaimed for his work with the likes of Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, T-Bone Burnett and John Zorn.” And finally, this week’s notable talk show appearances: Monday - Moby on Conan Tuesday - Cat Power on Letterman, The B-52’s on Leno, Carbon/Silicon on Conan Wednesday - Norah Jones on Letterman, Ani DiFranco on Leno, Kylie Minogue on the Late Late Show, R.E.M on The Colbert Report, and Harry Belafonte on Travis Smiley.

DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist Release “The Hard Sell” on DVD/CD

Mojo and myself went to see DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist spin nothing but vintage 45s a little while back at First Avenue. They called it The Hard Sell. The shit was packed and there was no shortage of people blazing up in the venue. Still, it was an intriguing set of classic hip-hop jams, old obscure crap (they focused a segment on “the worst song ever” as they called it), sample fodder, turntable wizardry (and invention), wacky animation, and their own reconstructions of famous beats (”Potholes in My Lawn” by De La Soul was my favorite). They’ve decided to take their Hollywood Bowl performance of The Hard Sell tour and put it on DVD and CD. Along with the standard set, it also includes a few cuts they deemed too complex for a live performance. Sounds buttery! It’s available via your favorite retailer and directly from DJ Shadow’s on-line store. The Hard Sell - Excerpt

DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist Bring “Hard Sell” to DVD

Add dates With just one date left on the European leg of their "Hard Sell" tour, DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist have kept their beatmatching partnership alive with the announcement of a handful of Australian dates in April, as well as a couple of North American festival dates in July. Unfortunately, live shows just don't last, unless they're recorded in one medium or another. Fortunately, Shadow and Chemist have documented the final installment of the so-called "Brainfreeze trilogy" (the other two being Brainfreeze and Product Placement) in long-lasting CD and DVD format, out now. Featured on the Hard Sell at the Hollywood Bowl DVD is the duo's complete "Hard Sell" performance at the titular venue, exclusive interviews with both DJs, behind-the-scenes footage documenting how the show came together, a bonus featurette called Live in Arcata, and a 40-page booklet with photos and an essay. From the looks of things, this is Alive 2007 for hip-hop heads, except on DVD. The CD, The Hard Sell (Encore), is a brand new version of the previously released (and now sold out) Hard Sell CD, recorded after the Hollywood Bowl gig (so it's not exactly a live document, sorry). According to DJ Shadow's web store, Encore "includes much of the material the duo had to scrap due to time constraints at the Bowl...and also a few routines deemed too complicated to attempt at the time!"
