The renegade graffiti artist Banksy who's politically charged and thought provoking art has reportedly been identified according to Time magazine. There have been false identifications in the past. If true I wonder if this will slow him down. I hope not.

You may want to sell those Banksy Posters!

If you don’t know him already, Banksy is a British Street-Artist who works anonymously and paints his artwork on public walls (price of admission free!). His work, which is mainly political in nature, has often been destroyed, but pieces that have been collected or removed from the street sell for a small fortune in galleries and auctions. A recent piece in Portobello Road fetched £218,000, nearly half a million US dollars and various Banksy Posters and Prints fetched tens of thousands at Bonham’s of London. Unfortunately the days when you could snag Banksy posters for a £100 or better yet, collect a discarded Banksy Posters or Stencil at such places as the Glastonbury festival are likely to be long gone! I have added a couple of links to some interesting articles I read recently: http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2008/feb/29/art.streetart http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1825271,00.html?imw=Y Technorati Tags: Banksy Posters

    Tagging and bragging

    http://www.artmarketmonitor.com/2008/08/07/tagging-and-bragg...

Can Graffiti Art Ever Be Tamed? The New York Times re-does the NY Sun story on the Angel Ortiz tagging the reconstruct Keith Haring commemorative mural just put up on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Which reminds us of this Time magazine story (from whence this lovely Finbarr O’Reilly/Reuters photo hails) from a few weeks ago that neatly summarizes the career of and controversy around graffiti-star-of-the-moment Banksy (For those of you with Banksy on the brain, Gawker shares your obsession.) But these glamorous and relatively glitzy stories are a far cry from the real graffiti battles like the one taking place in New Orleans that reminds us of New York’s own graffiti wars dating back to the 1970s. Sam-O, Sam-O. Vandalism or Art? (The Times-Picayune) Little Angel Was Here (The New York Times) Keith Haring’s ‘Silent Partner’ Speaks (New York Sun) Banksy: An Artist Unmasked (Time)

So I read on Time's website that Banksy has been unmasked. It's hard to describe my excitement level. Yawning would imply more open-mouthed interest in Banksy than I can possibly maintain. I suspect I'm the only person living within shouting distance of the London Orbital who doesn't appreciate the artistic talents and clever mystiquey-ness of Banksy, the anonymous graffiti artist who's plastered his "artwork" all over—well, I really don't know where it is. I've never bothered to read any of the many blog posts or online newspaper articles about him. In fact, for the longest time I suspected he must be related to Pudsey. Or maybe a character in Mary Poppins. I do hope that if Banksy is really exposed, maybe he'll just stop with the graffiti. I hate graffiti, even graffiti that sells for millions of dollars and is described as ironic and witty. There. If you had any lingering doubts, it is now confirmed that I. Am. Not. Cool.

Write comment (1 Comment) Last Updated ( Wednesday, 30 July 2008 ) Daily Grind - 7-24-08: User Rating: / 0 Written by Administrator Thursday, 24 July 2008 Well now it's been quite an eventful few days. I just bought Age of Conan, which is an interesting online RPG, but the requirements blow my machine out of the water. My machine just drags ass whenever I play it so it might be time to get a new computer, considering I couldn't play Assassin's Creed either. Both of which I now own but can't play. What does this mean? It means my current gaming computer, may become the new webserver. YAY! I'll know by the third anniversary. If I do do that, than I'm going to hold a competition to see who can hack the current webserver first (BUT NOT BEFORE I ANNOUNCE IT - JOHNNY). If they do, they can have it :) I'll ship it to them for free. If it's under $100 that is. Otherwise you gotta pay the difference. Other than that, I'm waiting for outlook to delete 65000 messages from one of our integration mailboxes that escaped our maintenence scripts, so I figured since I'm just sitting here with my thumb up my ass I'd put an entry up here. Whoopidee dooo!: Banksy unmasked - So they finally got him? : Don't get mad. There is no picture. Just speculation on a name. But still, this guy is one of those people who has done so many amazing things, it would almost be a shame to put a face to it. It's nice to have figures that are obscure, so their acts stand out, rather than the person themselves. I lived on the moon - (LINK FIXED) An amazing animation from the guy who did kiwi : The music and the video put me into a dream state. it's kind of bizarre, but I've watched the clip over and over again. It's old, and you may have seen it, but I haven't so I decided to post it. Meh! Maseequms - Ja-Seeq 4 is out : Much better skins, handles the downloads much better. A lot of the bugs are worked out, and you can download an entire playlist now. Suh-Weet. Intel unveils new chip - It's essentially a Pentiunm M with memory and an I/O subsystem : It was designed in preparation for the predicted onslaught of internet connected devices that will be coming out. The chip itself handls quite a bit more than just processing, so they called it System on a Chip. for more specs read the article. It's facinating. to people like me anyways. To the average web surfer it will probably put you to sleep :) 14 Podcasts to help you through your commute - I just thought of a brilliant idea : That likely some huge corporation is in the middle of developing. Why not make an iTunes/Podcast repository ready radio for the car. That way these awesome podcasts don't need to be downloaded, and transferred onto an ipod to be listened to? Hmmm. Anyhow, this is a great list of podcsasts, good for long drives. If your commute is anything like it is in the Bay Area, this will come in handy. Edgar Mitchell says aliens exist - Umm, this guy has actually been to the moon : So if I trust anyone, it would probably be him. He has the record for the longest moon walk ever. He also says that he has been briefed by the government that alien life exists. He also says that they have been covering it up for sixty years. I knew google had to be some alien technology........ Knol.google.com - Speaking of googles alien technology : It's an online encyclopdia from google. You can write an article, and it is ad supported, and you get paid for the ads people click when reading your article. Hopefully you're the expert on it and its a subject where everyone needs to purchase something. Either way it's a cool idea. I'll be checking that out thoroghly.

Has Bansky been unmasked? For years the graffiti artist known as Banksy has been the art world’s Deep Throat: a hugely influential figure whose identity remained shrouded in mystery. Now, like Deep Throat, he has been given a name. “Controversial artist Robin Gunningham” just doesn’t have quite the same allure, does it?

Ahmedabad. Bangalore. Two Indian cities rocked by bombs in the last two days. Two cities I’m intimately connected with. The former was where I grew up, where my father worked for many years at the Indian Institute of Management, at once the most avant-garde of Indian cities as well as the most retrograde. Ahmedabad, named after Sultan Ahmad Shah who founded it in 1411: Home of Mahatma Gandhi whose ashram nestled on the banks of the River Sabarmati; ISRO—the space research organization where India’s first rockets and satellites were developed; PRL—the Physical Research Laboratory; NID--the National Institute of Design; the aforementioned IIMA set up in collaboration with the Harvard Business School and ATIRA—the Ahmedabad Textile Industry Research Association for this was the Manchester of the East, with textile mills galore. For years Gujaratis (Ahmedabad is in Gujarat state) enjoyed the reputation of being the most non-violent people in India, if not the planet. Mahatma Gandhi veritably personified the spirit of gentle, unagressive yet enterprising Gujarati-ness. That image was forever changed in 1969 when the worst Hindu-Muslim riots erupted in Ahmedabad with dozens of Muslims raped and killed in the most brutal way. Schoolmates who lived in the old part of the city where most of the Muslim population was concentrated witnessed atrocities they couldn’t forget for years. Since then the word Ahmedabad has practically become synonymous with ‘communal riots’ (as such periodic bloodlettings are termed) so it is not surprising that the city has been targeted by an avenging Muslim group setting bombs off in BJP-dominated cities. This may explain why “the quaint and sleepy town of Bangalore” where my parents now live, the polar opposite of Ahmedabad in terms of communal relations, has also been targeted. The BJP, a political coalition of aggressive right-wing Hindu groups, has recently won state power in Karnataka where Bangalore is located. Karnataka is also one of six Indian states in which the Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) is active. SIMI is widely suspected to be the organization behind the multiple bombings in Ahmedabad and Bangalore. The word SIMI stirred up a memory. Seven years ago in Trivandrum, Kerala, I had been photographing the plethora of writing on the walls of that city. Local government elections were in the offing and i was fascinated by the symbols used by political parties. I distinctly remembered one piece of graffiti by a Muslim group that had struck me with the simple force and stridency of its message. Curious I rummaged through my old albums and found the photograph, taken in 2001. It was indeed a message from the self-same SIMI-- Shahadat, by the way, means martyrdom.Needless to say this is not what I had planned to blog about. But those distant explosions were too close to home in a manner of speaking for me to overlook. One can only hope that Kerala, the state my family is from and where most of my aunts and uncles live is not next on the list of the avenging Jehadis. It’s not really that hard to segue to what I had planned to write about because uncannily I had meant to focus on the murals all over Kingston memorializing the many “fallen soldiers” De Marco sang about so poignantly last year. It’s a subject I touch upon tangentially in a recent article titled “’No Grave Cannot Hold My Body Down’: Rituals of Death and Burial in Postcolonial Jamaica” so when Honor Ford-Smith asked if I wanted to accompany her on an expedition to view the work of one of the muralists I jumped at it.The muralist in question was Ricky Culture who lives in Three Miles where most of his work is to be found. On Tuesday afternoon I met Honor and Ricky at Sistren from where we set out. On our way to Three Miles I found myself driving along a series of roads that zigged and zagged in and out of so-called inner city communities under Ricky’s expert guidance . He knew these byroads from having walked them as a child on his way to school.Ricky was incredibly lean and gentle. He had started out as a musician but times got so hard that he turned his hand to painting. With the frequent deaths in communities there was a high demand for the services of mural painters. Judging by his slender frame the living was still hard even though Ricky has produced any number of murals, including some stunning ones of Emperor Haile Selassie and his Empress at an ital restaurant called Food For Life at the Three Miles roundabout. These were the only portraits done entirely from his imagination. The rest were all produced from photographs. His Imperial Majesty is somewhat of an obsession with Ricky as you can see. A number of his works are to be found in Majesty Gardens, home to “the poorest people in Jamaica” according to today’s Observer. At Roots Community FM the studio has a large mural of Bob Marley with locks flowing all around him like roots. Occasionally Ricky paints himself into a mural as an advertisement of his skills. What spooked me was how similar Ricky's stance and posture was in a photo i took of him to the autoportrait.Interestingly Ricky wasn’t familiar with the magnificent murals dedicated to Glenford Phipps or ‘Early Bird’ at Matthews Lane outside Father Zekes’ bar. Early Bird was Zekes’ brother and the Don of Matches Lane before Zekes. He was brutally killed in the early 90s and the poet Kamau Brathwaite immortalized his death in his long poem, Trenchtown Rock. A couple of years ago I produced a montage using images of this mural and fragments of Kamau’s poem (the image that is the frontispiece of this blog). The fact that Ricky had not come across the Early Bird wall painting or some others I had seen in Rosetown made me realize how territorially bound all these initiatives are. Someone should undertake to conduct a survey of just how many memorial murals there are in communities divided by conflicting loyalties all over Kingston. On our way home we stopped at Black Roses Corner to look at the memorials to Willie Haggart and ‘International dancer’ Bogle. A more complete selection of the photos i took of the murals we saw on Tuesday is available on my Flickr page. And as if all that weren’t enough internationally notorious British graffiti artist, Banksy, whose identity has been kept a strict secret all these years was ‘outed’ by none other than photographer Peter Dean Rickards, the editor of First Magazine. Is the writing on the walls or what?
