Jay Greene and I continue our debate about special education policy at Pajamas Media with the really good stuff happening in the comment section. He, quite generously, concedes that his study did not conclusively prove that schools are falsely diagnosing kids with learning disabilities in response to certain state funding policies. …

quality child care and early education, why isn't investing in young children a priority in the US? Why have I not hear one presidential candidate mention the struggle that working parents face in finding high quality, affordable child care? Laura at 11D said it best: Also, babysitters are poorly paid, because people think it's easy, because women's work is always undervalued, and because society doesn't want to pay for work that they still think should be freely given. Sometimes you can't understand

    About the Elite

    http://www.diabola.org/2008/06/20/about-the-elite/

entitlement, mediocrity, and cowardice—always focused on “playing by the rules” to get ahead.  Other academic bloggers have already weighed in on the article, whether it’s about Deresiewicz’s arrogance and assumptions, or whether it’s a reflection on the race towards elite education. My own response would be this: Thank you for recognising what my peers and I had figured out in high school. But whether it comes at fifteen or fifty, a revelation is a revelation.  Still, what has Deresiewicz discovered?  That people are not

    The Kids are Alright

    http://blogs.lib.ncsu.edu/page/distanttrain?entry=the_kids_a...

see that we have arrived in a day where it seems that Americans, particularly our young, are refusing to be afraid of the racial boogeyman that has been perpetuated by the older generations and our nation's collective historical baggage.Certainly our political cultures and socialization have a major effect on this phenomenon. It is certain that there will always be some degree of conflict between the new ideas of young and the old. But perhaps despite all their faults, it seems that the kids are alright.

good reason to punish Florida and Michigan for moving up their primaries. Perhaps they think in the long run, it will be better for the primary process and democracy. But they are doing a rotten job of explaining it to people. This matches up with what I said over at 11D: I will say that from the perspective of the average person, Clinton and Obama are tied. I mean, I'm a smart person and politically savvy, and really, I just can't see how it's so obviously an Obama win. Yes, I know, delegate numbers and stuff I don't
