“Emerging for the Rest of Us” is the working title of my thesis. Since college I have resonated with the writings of those associated with the emerging/emergent church. As is the case for many the thoughts and more importantly the practices of these leaders and communities articulated what I already knew and put words to some of the dissonance I felt. One of the main premises of many of those associated with the EM has been the need to deconstruct and move away with anything rooted in modernity. While I find value in this thought, it often results in the creation of a separate place of worship whether that be an “alternative” service or a new church plant. This may indeed be the appropriate response to an increasingly postmodern culture, however I wish to explore these issues through an ecumenical spirit. Perhaps in the excitement of the frontier of postmodernity we have forgotten about the suburban and rural churches that find themselves still in a predominantly modern culture.
