There are clear benefits to digital magazines, not least lower distribution costs for publishers. In troubled times for traditional print publishers, the digital platform can deliver, a rich mix of multimedia and interactivity cost-effectively. Done properly digital magazines offer an unparalleled opportunity to compliment print and web publishing efforts. Unfortunately, right now, the majority of digital magazines “Suck”, as e-media strategist Eric Shanfelt so eloquently puts it. But they don’t have to. Publishers just need to think clearly about the format, invest the time and resources needed to produce stand-alone digital products, optimised for the reader, and play to the format’s strengths. The Flipping Pages Blog is all about finding a future for digital magazines, working out how to lose the annoying stuff, stopping the format from sucking.
