My good friend, Fr. Bruce Nieli, CSP, has an excellent July 4th reflection at Busted Halo: In a cultural climate such as the United States—where the sense of polarization along social, economic, political and religious lines seems to be the default posture— maintaining unity amidst great diversity has become a profound challenge. …

Thurgood Marshall Centennial
http://mirrorofjustice.blogs.com/mirrorofjustice/2008/07/thurgood-marsha.htmlI just realized we let July 2 pass without mention the 100th anniversary of the birth of Thurgood Marshall. However 4th of July is a pretty good day to reflect on a couple of his thoughts. "A child born to a Black mother in a state like Mississippi...has exactly the same rights as a white baby born to the wealthiest person in the United States. …

Building Community in a Big City
http://mirrorofjustice.blogs.com/mirrorofjustice/2008/07/building-commun.htmlStill in response to Rick's post on the assisted suicide story in Germany, it made me think of how many opportunities there are to reach out to people who are alone in our cities, not only to take care of their material needs, but also to help them feel that they are a part of a community in which they are both loved and needed. …

FUMARE
http://fumare.blogspot.comthe Reagan administration." Kmiec's martyrdom over being denied communion is really tiring. If it happened, it was a mistake by the minister of communion, not a mistake of the Church. Professor Kmiec, put the martyr complex to bed, please. Thankfully, over at Mirror of Justice, Professor Rick Garnett of Notre Dame Law has a rebuttal which tears apart Kmiec's flimsy position. Here's to hoping that Kmiec takes Garnett's arguments seriously. UPDATE: In the comments, Buttercup alerts me to more from Kmiec. Over at National Review's The Corner, there is an exchange between Kmiec and

http://blog.acton.org/archives/2389-Round-Up-Obama-and-the-F...Here’s a round-up of early reaction (to be updated as appropriate) to Obama’s speech about his proposed future for the faith-based initiative under his administration. Rev. Richard Cizik of the NAE (HT): “Mr. Obama’s position that religious organizations would not be able to consider religion in their hiring for such programs would constitute a deal-breaker for many evangelicals, said several evangelical leaders, who represent a political

DONNA BRAZILE- People Interested in High Gas Prices Not Infanticide
http://opinionatedcatholic.blogspot.com/2008/06/donna-brazil...Oh My. Yes this Donna Brazile speaking. Louisiana's own contribution (by the way she was raised in Kenner not New Orleans Proper which I thought was interesting) to National Politics. A person that is "Catholic" that admitted back in 2000 that "Even I have trouble explaining to my family that we are not about killing babies." However I cannot get to much on Brazile and it is not because I like it a lot and admire her. But perhaps she is telling the truth.
