  1. Bolting Lettuce

    http://www.patnsteph.net/weblog/?p=373

I think bolting lettuce looks funny.  This is a romaine (or cos) variety, and you can see the flower stalk alone is about twice the size of the head of lettuce itself.  I’m growing this on my roof this year to save seeds. …

Here’s another blog. Mrs. Greenhands has done what I’ve always wanted to do, plant an old growth tree from seed somewhere I thought would be enjoyed by future generations.…

  3. Contaminated Manure in the UK

    http://www.patnsteph.net/weblog/?p=370

Rebsie just did a post on this here.  Before that it appeared on the Green Lane Allotments site. The issue seems to be a new hormone based weed killer called aminopyralid.  While it’s not approved for use on food crops, it’s applied to pasture land used to graze cattle.  It’s very persistent, and residues are contaminating gardens and allotments where the resulting manure was applied. …

Every silver lining has a cloud

But having an allotment is hard work (as I found out) and not for everyone. summer loves

    http://ponyboypressprojects.blogspot.com/2008/07/summer-love...

are now in full bloom here in Portland and man, are they good. I keep thinking I will make something with them, but I would rather just eat them straight. Here are some cute pin cushions from squirrelonaledgetop Lately, I have been getting garlic scapes or garlic shoots from the Farmers Market. They are really good in sautes. Garlicky, but also green tasting. I think they would make a good pesto, too. Here is a nice green garlic painting from FLYoungstudio

    Scape Time

    http://futurehousefarm.blogspot.com/2008/06/scape-time.html

let them get too big—the conventional wisdom is that cutting scapes off will let the plant spend more energy on making a big, fat bulb of garlic—but we're lazy and they look cool. Incidentally, Patrick just put up a really interesting post about breeding garlic from seed that's worth checking out if you're interested in that kind of thing.
