  1. Back In My Day: Emory Professor Complains

    http://theubiquitouslibrarian.typepad.com/the_ubiquitous_librarian/2008/05/back-in-my-day-emory-professor-complains.html

We have a speaker scheduled this afternoon who exuberates elitism-- an English professor from Emory hyping his new book that complains about the kids today. You know the story, they don’t read books, texting has killed grammar, facebook has replaced real conversations, video games and TV are bad, and so forth. …

  2. Georgia State University Library – a few observations

    http://theubiquitouslibrarian.typepad.com/the_ubiquitous_librarian/2008/05/georgia-state-university-library-a-few-observations.html

Two weeks ago I visited the GSU Library a few blocks down the road from us. They recently completed a $23 million renovation and I was curious what they did with the space. Charging students a $35 fee per semester gets you a lot of change to work with—I wish we had a $5 library fee so that we could develop new spaces every few years. …

  3. Playing with Thunder

    http://theubiquitouslibrarian.typepad.com/the_ubiquitous_librarian/2008/05/playing-with-thunder.html

Today I got a peak at Thunder from Polyvision (Steel Case) – they spin it as a “real time global collaboration system” – but it’s really an interesting way to share and create information. It pushes the boundaries of the desktop and/or wall space. …

    Our business

    http://libraryriot.com/2008/05/29/our-business/

Personally, I don’t see the library as being in the information business. In fact, I don’t see us in the service business anymore either. We’re in the inspiration business, and everything that we do should drive their success.” - Brian Mathews

Brian Matthews shares a fascinating conversation: http://theubiquitouslibrarian.typepad.com/the_ubiquitous_librarian/2008/04/the-anatomy-of.html The transparent technologies of flickr and twitter offer tremendous assessment possibilities. We hear about students pulling all-nighters, but this is documented evidence. 4:56 PM paper + pres due in 22 hours. tick tock. group members unite

if the SCRC is planning to do with the flickr project, if anything. Added note: After writing this post, I was reading through posts on “Library 2.0″ on The Ubiquitous Librarian, the blog of Brian Scott Matthews.  I stumbled across his post, “Social-enabled Library Websites? The Post-It Note Concept.”  Matthews outlines his suggestion for adding more interactive options to the NCSU Libraries site:

    Annoyed Librarian

I would like to address the subject of cubicles. I know, I know, exciting stuff. Stop, AL, you'll say! Remember my blood pressure! As we know from the title of his blog, the Ubiquitous Librarian likes to be everywhere, but everywhere should never include a cubicle. Out sick for a week and forced to move into a cubicle. Use up too many sick days and they know how to discipline you at whatever library he works at. He thinks his stay might be temporary because of some HVAC problem. Well, possibly.

    Find an Open Computer

As the semester gets endy and the library gets FULL, remember we have a handy online system that allows you to see where there are unused computers in Perkins, Bostock, Vesic, Music, and Lilly. Another school (Georgia Tech) set up a system like this, and a student cartoonist in their paper replied with the following:
