From a WABA press release: Spurred by soaring gas prices and our country’s overdependence on oil, bicycle advocates from around the country are urging Americans to show their patriotism this July 4th, what they’re calling Independence from Oil Day, by pledging to make more gas-free trips. …

DCist is reporting a NET start date of August 1st. due to Pepco still working on getting electricity installed in all of the bike racks mean that SmartBike won't actually be operational until August 1 at the earliest, "but no guarantees." Via TheWashCycle, the news (to me; the story’s been out for over a month, ouch) that D.C. has for the first time in many years slipped off the list that the lock company Kryptonite keeps of the Top 10 cities with the most bike thefts

Heading to the Mall? Take Your Bike

If you need help finding a path, Bike Washington has an excellent map of commuting trails (if you’re coming from VA, I’d suggest using the Roosevelt or 14th St. bridges - Memorial will be overrun with people). And what to do once you’re there? WashCycle tells us that : WABA will be offering two free valet bike parking locations as a way to encourage more people to ride their bikes to the fireworks. The bike valets will be located at 15th and Independence Ave SW and on the south side of the Lincoln

ll calculate the safest route, a safe route, or the quickest route. Just thinking out loud (or as I like to call it, “blogging”) here, but what would it take to get something like this fired up for this area? (Helmet tip: TheWashCycle)

    4. Bikers are generally well behaved on shared trails, but we tend to be blamed for everyone else's idiocy. The county has recently posted 15 MPH speed limits on the Capital Crescent Trail, which is just insane. When I ride the trail -- going toward Georgetown, anyway -- I'm running 16 to 21 MPH, and I'm being passed by the serious bikers. So why do I say a speed limit of 15 MPH is insane? Because the serious bikers (and I) are aware of the rules of the trail
