  1. Mstar Down to a Single Engineer?

    http://www.freeutopia.org/2008/07/05/mstar-down-to-a-single-engineer/

We've all known that the situation at Mstar was dire, but who would have guessed it was this bad? Mstar is reportedly down to a single network engineer to handle all of their operations and technical support issues. …

  2. EXCLUSIVE: Veracity Pulls Out of Broadweave Merger, Sorenson Possibly Backing Out, iProvo Sale on Verge of Failure

    http://www.freeutopia.org/2008/07/02/exclusive-veracity-pulls-out-of-broadweave-merger-sorenson-possibly-backing-out-iprovo-sale-on-verge-of-failure/

High placed sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, have confirmed that Veracity has pulled out of the merger with Broadweave and that Sorenson Capital may have withdrawn financial backing as a result. The 60-day delay cited by Broadweave in the papers is rumored to be buying time to find new backers. …

  3. iProvo D-Day Arrives with Deafening Silence

    http://www.freeutopia.org/2008/07/01/iprovo-d-day-arrives-with-deafening-silence/

The deadline for Broadweave's takeover of iProvo has come and gone without much news or fanfare at all. In fact, other than the phone customers from Mstar, we don't know if any transition has taken place. Neither the Daily Herald nor Deseret News could reach Broadweave for comment and I know that Joe Pyrah has been trying for about a week. …

    iProvo hearing tonight

    http://www.thornock.us/wordpress/archives/177

Provo City Council web site for a public hearing tonight about the proposed sale of iProvo to Broadweave. The hearing is in the council chambers at 7 PM. A number of people — particularly Jesse Harris of FreeUTOPIA.org — have opined that this sale looks a lot like HomeNet part 2. I think they're being overly optimistic (which, if you remember the original HomeNet debacle, is really saying something.) No Tags

    iProvo Sale and RFP

$40 million for the network, they are simply assuming the bond debt, which will fall back to Provo City if they can’t sustain their business model and Sorenson Capitol backs out of the transaction. I wish Provo the best success in their efforts, others have been more critical. Some have claimed my comments to the press are so much “sour grapes”. Let me be clear, my interest in iProvo since its inception was being a provider on an open-competition network. I believe there is a very good reason private interests worldwide

Jeremy * What is iProvo (and Utopia)? iProvo and Utopia are wholesale municipal fiber-optic networks to your home.  iProvo is available in nearly 100% of homes and businesses in Provo, Utah, and offers internet speeds of 15Mb (both up and down, 50

on the issue. If he hasn't studied it enough to know that the product is not inferior to the competition, what else is he missing about the issue? As for many other comments in Representative Urquhart's post, I find a response by Jesse Harris (see here) addresses those much better than I can.

    Tracking Utah Candidates on Broadband

political debate. Where the candidates stand on such issues should be taken seriously, and directly effects not only the future of our political discourse, but also Utah's direction in an increasingly technology dependent climate. So I was excited to read this today on the FreeUTOPIA blog: On March 7, the candidate registration period for state and county offices opened up. It'll close on March 17. At that point, I'm going to send the following list of questions to each candidate and post their responses on

UTOPIA: Creating True Free Market Competition In Communications

    http://www.themannings.org/soapbox/2008/02/05/utopia-creatin...

Jesse has a great post summarizing the history of telecommunications and the terrible mess our government has made of things. I highly recommend that anyone interested in this issue check out the linked post above and FreeUTOPIA.Org. A lot of political forces are aligned against UTOPIA and that is unfortunate because it seems to be the only possible chance for Utah to break out of the current mess. UTOPIA is not just a cool gadget that local governments are promising residents or

In Quotes of The Week, he gives us quotes of the week.I hope all of you have taken the time to read even more than this, to show your support for the

us and they left town. We are now the dominant provider and have, to our knowledge, the lowest rates for cable and high speed internet access in the US. Ray offers perhaps one of the best bookends for the debate on municipal efforts, and projects like UTOPIA, iProvo, and Muni Wi-fi; their potential to create real competition. The number one advantage is the economic impact. This is closely related to the other main advantage, this product democratizes technology. By that I mean that it makes it cheap,
