Soren Johnson: 7 Deadly Sins for Strategy Games I am a big fan of Soren Johnson's work. That being said, I keep an eye on his blog, Designer Notes. In a recent post, he listed what he felt were the "seven deadly sins" of strategy game design. Most of them were dead on for whatever reason. …

Fixing pathfinding a la Paul Tozour
http://www.intrinsicalgorithm.com/IAonAI/2008/08/fixing-pathfinding-la-paul-tozour.htmlFixing pathfinding a la Paul Tozour My friend and colleague, Paul Tozour, has put up an excellent post at the internet blog he shares with some other big names, Game/AI. In it, he covers all sorts of stuff that is "wrong" with pathfinding and offers evidence as to why nav meshes are better than waypoint graphs. …

Everybody Dies, Except the Bots: An API for DEFCON
http://aigamedev.com/essays/defcon-bots-apisame abilities as the player: A fog of war hides opponent activities, targets and positions of opposing units are largely unknown. In the case of games (especially RTS games) it is often much easier to let the AI see everything. Soren Johnson gave an interesting talk about that at this years GDC, in essence the Civilization 4 AI has to cheat to be challenging. Writing an embodied AI that can beat good players proved just too difficult. For researchers, however, the situation is often a bit different. They can use

Web site troubles... new posts coming!
http://www.intrinsicalgorithm.com/post-playem/2008/05/web-si...at about the same time as I go shopping for a new ISP - something I don't want to have to waste time doing. Because the site has been up and down for 5 weeks, I've been a little hesitant about posting. I have plenty of material I want to put on IA on AI and have been wanting to start putting some new observations on here. I have been assured that the ISP issue will be solved soon (although I was told that over a month ago). However, I think that I may just start writing some of this material anyway.

Web host upgrade = site freeze
http://www.intrinsicalgorithm.com/IANews/2008/03/web-host-up...March 31st. I will have to assume that this means that blog entries and comments and all message board posts that are made during that period will be lost on Monday. Therefore, I will not be posting anything during this coming weekend either here, IA on AI, or Post-Play'em. Also, please don't frustrate yourself by making a comment or posting on the message board as I can't guarantee that it will survive. I hope this isn't frustrating and that all goes well. I'm sure I will have something to say come

Bioshock interview and Civ 4 notes
http://www.intrinsicalgorithm.com/post-playem/2008/02/biosho...Ok... this is kind of a Post-Play'em article. Check out my taped GDC interview with John Abercrombie, AI Lead on Bioshock over at IA on AI. As I play further into the game, I will eventually post actual play observations. My interview has kinda spoiled the purity of my game experience, though. I know what to look for!

AND I had to get back in sync with the real world such as it is in the Central time zone. For those that haven't glanced at IA on AI lately, the AI-related posts about GDC are going there. One is Soren Johnson's lecture on his Civ 4 AI. The other is my (audio) interview with John Abercrombie of 2K Boston about the AI he did for Bioshock. There will be more as I wade through all my

Specifically, I need to touch on Ray Kurzweil's keynote, Damian Isla's lecture on the Halo 3 AI, my brief interview with the
