Taken at the same time this shot. Each one a testament to the awesomeness of an f2 macro lens, for the thin depth of field and delicious bokeh. …

Today in the park
http://www.kotodama.net/blog/?p=634As I described in my previous post, today Genbo, Zoe and I went with Anthony and his dad Jeffrey up into the hills near my house. At the very top was a small military graveyard. More on that later, but I just downed a big glass of beer, and I don’t feel like sleeping quite yet, so I thought I would just throw these up for now. …

Lightpainting Ayame
http://www.kotodama.net/blog/?p=630Today Jeffrey and Anthony came over and we explored the large park near my house farther than I ever have before. It extends all the way back into the mountain, and I’ve always wondered what’s back there. More about what we found (such as a grave for soldiers of the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars) later, but first some shots I just took tonight. …

Water Play at Gen’s House
http://regex.info/blog/2008-07-06/859Zak invited us over today to play in a little pool he set up on their balcony. Anthony likes playing with Gen (who is now almost four years old).

Playing with Gen
http://regex.info/blog/2008-06-12/835Fumie is still miserably sick, so after school, I took Anthony over to play with three-year-old Gen (Zak's son, who has appeared on my blog plaing with Anthony here and here). We went exploring in western Otsu where the city meets the mountain, with plenty to see and photograph, although I didn't quite get as many photos

Venting About My (sort of) Cursed Vacation
http://regex.info/blog/2008-04-03/780, but had somehow gotten switched to low-quality “basic jpg” mode. Ugh. I'm still a bad enough photographer that I rely on the latitude that shooting raw affords, and that was lost for a whole day's worth of pictures. I got a call from Zak telling me that my blog had been down for the last couple of days, in case I wasn't aware of it. No, I wasn't. (With help from Zak and my brother, I was able to get things repaired, so their help is a bright spot that I appreciate.)

Playing in the River with Gen
http://regex.info/blog/2008-03-22/772Zak and his 3-and-a-half-year-old son Gen for a day of play, including a trip to the same park in Otsu City that Anthony and Monet played in last week (that I mentioned on my Overwhelmed: an Embarrassment of Riches

Newlyweds, Etc. in Kanazawa

His most recent post, though, of some toddlers in a communal buggy prompts me to post a shot I happen to have taken yesterday morning, before leaving for Kanazawa:

City of Otsu’s “Yumekko” Play Land
http://regex.info/blog/2008-02-28/751Kyoto City has a wonderful play spot for infants and preschoolers, the Play Land at its Kodomo Miraikan (“hall for children's future”), and Anthony has been enjoying it for the last four years. Zak invited us to come to Otsu City's version of the same thing, and I was astounded at how nice it was. Otsu's Yumekko (“dream child”) play land is of a similar style to Kyoto's – lots of wooden toys and activity areas

Second-Tier Photos from June 3, 2007

The construction in this case is the same wood veneer over bamboo and mud walls seen in my Old House of Bamboo and Mud

Jeffrey Friedl’s Blog

Anthony had a play-date with Zak's son, Gen, and with only a light dusting on the ground at 11am, I decided to make the 20-minute drive to Ootsu. The bit of snow was pretty, but the drive was entirely uneventful until we came out of the mile-long tunnel under the mountains separating
