Here is a slide show of images from the rehearsals, concerts, and classes of the 2008 Max Aronoff Viola Institute (along with some non-musical sights from the campus and our friends’ homes). It’s hard to believe that Joyce and I started this thing 18 years ago - almost two decades! Ok, now I feel …

teaching/performing
http://www.nobleviola.com/wordpress/2008/06/30/teachingperforming/This week I’m up in Kenmore, Washington teaching and performing at the Max Aronoff Viola Institute, which I helped to found 18 years ago. The facility that we use is Bastyr University, which has all the classrooms and the lovely Chapel which is acoustically renowned (and used for a lot of movie …

Blogging with the boss
http://theafmobserver.typepad.com/abu_bratsche/2008/06/blogg...very kind words about a recent post of mine, which made my morning. But, more important (and why this is a post and not a private email), I found an extremely interesting discussion. Charles had posted a frank retrospective

Reflecting on the end of the Oregon Symphony season
http://gatheringnote.wordpress.com/2008/06/01/reflecting-on-...nice, critical review of their season which ended last week. His observations sparked a thorough debate on the season and the programmatic choices. Music Director Carlos Kalmar even responds, and Noble is kind enough to post Kalmar

Noble reflects on the past OSO season
http://northwestreverb.blogspot.com/2008/05/noble-reflects-o...Charles Noble's thoughtful posting about the Oregon Symphony's past season is a must-read for those keeping track of the orchestra. I am probably in the minority of audience members who really enjoy all of the music for stage works (the one time I heard the LA Phil in Disney Hall, they

Columbus Around The Blogosphere
http://www.adaptistration.com/adaptistration/2008/05/columbu...Dan Wakin at the New York Times has published at least two articles on the topic, the most recent one is available here. Robert Levine recently weighed in with his usual razor sharp writing at Abu Bratsch. Charles Noble from the Oregon Symphony had something to say about drains and circling. Columbus Symphony Orchestra musician David Thomas, who usually doesn't write about issues in his orchestra, has been using his blog to express his perspective. John Stoehr makes it absofu*kinglutely clear how he

Horndog Blog
http://brucehembd.blogspot.comEvery 15 years or so, it seems that naysayers proclaim with reports and studies that the American classical music industry is in serious trouble. In the 1990's it was the Wolf report. In 2008, it is the Flanagan report. There are few defenders and many attackers on this current report and its conclusions. Without having studied either report in detail, I cannot offer an analyst's opinion. However I do note that while the Wolf report is still being discussed today, the mainstream press has barely even noticed

Classical crystal ball gazing
http://fromeverycorner.blogspot.com/2008/05/classical-crysta...important other folks making noise on the PDX classical circuit. And then I go on to chat with/about those four top-shelf musicians/music administrators in the city, all worthy of attention: conductor Ryan Heller, Oregon Symphony violist and blogger Charles Noble, administrator slash singer Mark Powell and PSU orchestral director Ken Selden. Each of those four, in turn, recommended four folks they felt would be major Portland art-music players in the years ahead. Some names that surfaced: Elaine Calder, Carlos
