nondescript, anonymous conference brethren. Sister Louisiana-[Location goes here] school UL-Lafayette at least has the "Ragin' Cajun" thing going for them, but with ULM forced to bear an Arena League-esque nickname so generic they likely bought it in a black-and-white box reading "Nickname," I don't know how Auburn fans are supposed to keep them straight from the Arkansas St.'s, North Texas's, Tennessee Southwest's, or Northeastern Mississippi St. Tech--Pascagoula's of the world.

For more insights into unintended parsing issues (remember Pen Island?), check out Tate Linden's post on Putincups.com. "The umlaut is officially no longer hardcore," declares Dan Holbrook, who blogs at Language Is the People's and therefore knows about the heavy metal umlaut (aka "rock dots"), as in Mötley Crüe. Here’s a great exercise: take your tagline and put your competitor’s identity mark (logo) above it. Does it fit? Does it work? Then you have a bad tagline. Hat tip to Thingnamer's Tate Linden, who has more to say on the subject. ___ ¹ Notice the nuanced difference between this tagline and the one directly above it. I'll wait while you notice it. Have you noticed it yet? Take your time.

imitative. It's a sea of green out there, nomenclaturally speaking: Green Seal, Green Points, Greener Gadgets Conference, Green Globes, even the Green Burial Council. Talk about lack of distinctiveness! Fellow namer Tate Linden has written about the perils of eco-clichés and his own semi-successful efforts to avoid them.
