Is Innovation on the Internet Over? - Page 2
YouTube for example is a general video service. The next big thing in internet video might be more specialised and targeted to a certain audience. Maybe a video service provider that connects artists and other creative types. Twitter: Great social media tool but some people want to have longer messages. So the next innovation in that field may be something that allows for longer messages and community chats.
This type of innovation is what the marketing gurus Al Ries and Jack Trout called, the law of duality in marketing. “There are two types of people in the market. There are those who will buy from the leader and those who won’t buy from the leader.” So the new products that will make it big will position themselves as opposites to the leaders (YouTube, Twitter etc). They will fill the gaps created by the leaders. In doing so they will capture the other group of consumers who do not want to buy from the leader.
