New York Times Reports Q4 Earnings
Print is not dead yet. At least not if you're The New York Times. The newspaper reported higher-than-expected earnings for the fourth quarter of 2009.
The Times continues to pursue ad-driven content models, though profitable sources of ad revenue can be hard to come by these days.
They're certainly not out of the woods yet, but Times Chief Executive Janet Robinson has hopes for a slow, steady recovery. The paper "[expects] the rate of decline for print advertising to continue to improve modestly from the fourth quarter."
Print advertising is still in decline, but, you know, maybe it will decline less this year. At this point, the print industry may be rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, but the longer they can hold out, the longer they'll have to come up with new alternatives if they want to continue operations in the coming decade.
