News Corp Will Pay Largest Settlement in UK for its Hacking Frolic: Multi-millions
Most probably to avoid the continual pressure of lawyers digging into their records and exposing them to the public light, News International, the British news tentacle of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp will settle legal claims over its phone hacking, this based on agreements with News Group Newspapers, publisher of some of News International's titles. News Group has agreed to "compensation being assessed on the basis that senior employees and directors of NGN knew about the wrongdoing and sought to conceal it by deliberately deceiving investigators and destroying evidence," said a prepared statement by the lawyers of hacked victims. This will most likely result in the largest pay out ever in the UK for such egregious practice.
Unable to staunch the bleed of evidence last year, News International finally acquiesced, acknowledging that their news generating voicemail hacking was mammoth and not the work of the lone, "rogue" news slinger jailed for the crime in 2007. With the explosion of the scandal in the press, News Corp ignited a fireball that burned the company's reputation, singed the British press, and flash fired the police and the political establishment. The scandal forced the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron's spokesman, a former News of the World editor, and prompted the resignations of senior police officials who were accused of failing to properly investigate the affair.
Thursday, the scandal and celebrity victimization created a crowd crush and standing room only in Court 16 of the High Court as the victims of now defunct The News of The World had their statements read out in open court, part of the legal settlement process. News International lawyers issued multiple apologies with pay out agreements totaling over $1 million for the first 15 claimants, excluding their undisclosed, weighty legal costs. There are purportedly 36 victims who agreed to settle in the HIgh Court. And these are only the first wave of victim settlements. More than 740 are understood to be on record and News Corp has already received 60 claims. Police say there are almost 6,000 potential victims.
