Ben and Jerry's removed cochineal extract long ago, in order to meet the requirements of Cherry Garcia being listed as Kosher. The purposeful eating of insects is against the eating practices of Jews who follow religious-based dietary restrictions. Other food makers have removed the red ingredient because it has been known to cause allergies in a small percentage of the population.

There's still a whole bunch of red foods out there with cochineal extract in them. Just check the ingredient listing for it (or its alternative name, Carmine). If I ruined those foods for you, sorry (or you're welcome, depending on your point of view). You can always email the company and request a change-up of the recipe.

A Change.Org petition has been circulating, demanding that Starbucks change its collective marketing mind and use a natural, food-based red dye alternative. I'm rooting for, well...

Strawberries.
