Samsung is getting its mojo back with a report that Samsung Galaxy S III beats out Apple's iPhone in Q3 this year.

According to research firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung sold 18 million Galaxy S III in Q3 this year while Apple sold 16.2 million iPhone 4S in that same quarter.

Neil Shah, a senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, said in a statement that it's the first time that the Galaxy S III has taken the top spot in the smartphone market that shipped globally, with 11 percent share overall.

Apple could reclaim the smartphone shipping crown in the fourth quarter with the iPhone 5. Shah's colleague Neil Mawtson stated, "Samsung's Galaxy S III has proven wildly popular with consumers and operators across North America, Europe and Asia." "However, the Galaxy S III's position as the world's best-selling smartphone model is likely to be short-lived."

Meanwhile, the iPhone 5 has gotten off to a solid start already with an estimated 6.0 million units shipped globally during Q3 2012, according to the aforementioned research firm.

According to that same firm, a large touchscreen design, extensive distribution accross dozens of countries, and generous operator subsidies have been among the main causes of the Galaxy S III's success.
