Social Beer Network Untappd Snaps Up Rival Red Pint
Norm from Cheers would have been proud...
Since September, Untappd’s members have enjoyed the ability to share what they’re drinking, where they’re drinking it, and just who might be hanging out with them. Their over one million checkins can be synchronized with and shared on Facebook, Twitter, and even the FourSquare application.
Things move fast in the drinking check-in market. Red Pint is only 8 months older than Untappd, and competition has been fierce. With the integration of Red Pint,’s userbase, Untappd will enjoy a ready-made audience devoted to micro-brews and craft beers, rounding out its beer-based repertoire.
Much like Foursquare, Untappd users can earn badges for checking into breweries or drinking establishments, trying out suggested brews, or even for drinking a certain number of a type of beer.
John Vajda, co-founder of Red Pint, who will be joining the Untappd team of Greg Avola and Tim Mather, stated “We want nothing more than to see the modernizing of the craft beer experience via mobile apps and change the beer industry for the better.” The micro and craft brewery market has enjoyed continued growth, with many smaller breweries running at full output. Obtaining data about who is drinking what and where will likely prove very valuable in determining future shipping and production patterns.
If you are a current Red Pint member, expect outages on the app on Wednesday, as the two services are fully integrated. After that, simply visit http://m.untappd.com on your mobile device to use the combined service - no download is required.
