Response: This is definitely an advantage. The point was made to clarify what the intention of social media marketing is. Those who expect to engage in social media marketing and see a direct path to a sale will be disappointed. The consumer of today is different than the consumer of yesterday. They no longer necessarily believe that a particular brand is right for them because the company tells them so. They want to hear what others say about that brand. As a matter of fact, your brand is what your customers and potential customers think it is – not necessarily what you say it is.

People today will search on the web for reviews and discussions before making most purchases. The fact that social media is about conversations is definitely a benefit. Naturally all businesses want to see the conversions to sales, and with the most appropriate usage of social media marketing that fits the specific requirements for any given brand, those conversions will happen – just not as quickly as most people want.

Social media marketing, used optimally, is a very effective marketing tool.
