For two brief minutes today the hustle and bustle of British commercial life ceased. At 11 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time a respectful hush swept through offices, workshops and high streets as the country remembered its fallen heroes.

Even Twitter's soundless chatter was muted for one hundred and twenty precious seconds of reflection on this Remembrance Day. The tweeting stopped as people everywhere paused to remember, to imagine, to pray.

The current woes of economic uncertainty were put aside, briefly, and the nation honoured those who'd paid the ultimate price for their country.

Despite the increaseing distance between the First World War and twenty-first century Britain, the strength of feeling for Remembrance Day day remains solid. Indeed, it's probably growing stronger.

Businesses and organisations are actively encouraged to participate in the two minute silence, although it's not practical for all to observe it.
