Would You Want to Socialize More With Colleagues?
With working hours tending to get longer and longer many would no doubt argue that they already spend too much time with their colleagues at work. However new research suggests that people would like to socialise more with their colleagues outside of normal office hours.
The study of 2,000 workers, commissioned by bowling companies AMF Bowling, Bowlplex, Hollywood Bowl, Namco Funscape and Tenpin, found that 40% of those surveyed felt they did not spend enough time with their colleagues outside of work.
Corinne Sweet, psychologist and relationship expert, said: "Playing - as well as working - with colleagues can help us develop more 'rounded relationships' and improve trust at work. This can lead to increased creativity, productivity, friendship, even love."
She explained that minor irritations and misunderstandings between staff can be ironed out over a drink, which has the potential to improve morale in the office and promote teamwork.
Many companies fail to provide opportunities for such extra curricular bonding however. The survey found that 21% of companies only offer team building activities outside of work just once per year, with a further 44% never hosting social events for employees.
This is despite a third of employees suggesting that letting off steam with colleagues outside of work helps bonding and team performance.
