I am not a lawyer, and this article is not as substitute for legal advice, but I have gone through this difficult process and have counseled hundreds of people struggling through divorce so I want to share my insights with you. It’s very hard to hear a story of a woman or man who has been so hard hit by a marital break-up that he or she can’t make informed choices or focus on the math, and ends up in a tenuous financial situation after the divorce is finalized.

It’s the end of February. If you’re in the frame of mind to end your marriage, try to move aside the emotions and concentrate on the math. The financial decisions you make or don’t make will determine the quality of your new life.
