The Legacy of Leadership
If we were born in cabbage patches we could start our lives with a clean slate and make our marks in present time. However, the history of eons is recorded in our cells and it is when we learn about our personal past that we can be high level successful leaders.
Here is an example from a GUTSY WOMEN retreat filled with executives and high potential females looking for tools and tips as they navigate the complex world of modern business.
Evelyn was looking at the design in the carpet wondering why the hell she had asked her mother to join her for this weekend. And then she remembered, it was because the name of the program, GUTSY WOMEN was daring her to do something courageous. She was a V.P. in a technology company and lately had felt stalled in her progress as a leader. It was her idea to bring her mother, a woman who had worked her whole life as a head nurse to share the information.
However, at this moment she regretted her decision. Sleeping on a bed of nails, walking across hot coals, being jettisoned out of a canon all seemed simple compared to being at a conference with her mother where the possibility of honest talk might just happen.
Evelyn listened as her mother gave more information than the “what do you hope to get from the program” required. “I grew up with a mother who had been abused by her father. He beat her every time she spoke her mind. It cooled her fire. She married and kept her distance from my father; no man would ever hurt her again. She gave us children all the stuff we needed, clean clothes, good food, made sure we had pocket money. What she didn’t have left over was the energy of love.”
