Thank you to Spark Business from Capital One for sponsoring this feature highlighting small business.

According to the Small Business Administration, more than 250,000 members of the armed services are expected to make the transition to civilian status this year. Twenty five percent of them have considered starting or purchasing a business. The 12,000 small business mentors of SCORE will be there to help them with their daily business battles, just as they have been for almost half a century.

Since 1964, the Service Core of Retired Executives, better known as SCORE, has lent a hand up to over 9 million entrepreneurs in the form of small business tools, training workshops, and hands-on meetings with their knowledgeable mentors.

Last November was National Entrepreneurship Month, and SCORE mentors gathered to honor not only those who continue to proudly serve on the battlefield, but also those who are learning the tactics of small business success.

"Veterans have the training, discipline, and perseverance that make for great small business owners and valued employees," says SCORE CEO Ken Yancey. "As the American economy continues to rebuild after the recession, veterans and their families will play a key role in this nation's success as they did during their time of service at home or abroad. SCORE is committed to helping our veterans just as our veterans have worked tirelessly for us."

President Obama began November’s celebration of small business ownership with the reminder that “entrepreneurs are responsible for most of the new jobs in our country, (and) helping them succeed is essential to helping our economy grow." And help, SCORE did, assisting in the creation of 40,537 new small businesses last year, with more than 60,000 new jobs created.

What has led to the incredible success of this business-building program? “SCORE mentors are men and women who have been through the trials just as veterans have. Veterans have been out there. They know what it took to survive in their world”, said Navy veteran Joel Goldberg, CEO of Aurico, Inc., a startup that began in his home twenty years ago. Goldberg won this year’s SCORE Award for Outstanding Veteran-Owned Small Business.
