Small Business Presence Increasingly Mobile

A recent study of 500 small businesses conducted by domain company Network Solutions led to an infographic that highlights the importance of ensuring your company’s website is mobile-friendly. While only 14% of businesses surveyed said they had a separate instance of their site created solely for the small screen, over 69% agreed with the statement “mobile marketing is key to my small business growth in the next five years.”

Why the disparity? Time and resources. Let’s face it, there are only a handful of people working for you, and you are the marketing department for your small business.

Many Americans eat, work, exercise, watch television, read, and perform a number of other activities with a smartphone or tablet sharing the spot right next to, or in front of them. Of course they shop with one as well, whether to look up product information, comparison shop, or call and ask a question about hours, return policies and more. And let’s face it, as a small business owner, you only have so many people on staff who can stop everything and answer the phone — so having frequently asked questions front and center on a mobile website is paramount.

Is my site just fine now?

Perhaps you’re wondering if you can simply get away with using your current site. You can see how your site would operate on a mobile device by accessing it on any number of devices your employees (or you) already have. This is only a cursory check. If you want your existing website evaluated more in depth, with a report of what you can do to make it more mobile compatible, visit Google’s How to Go Mo site. Plug in your site’s URL (web address) and away you go.

Can’t I just convert my site over somehow?

If you’ve heeded advice to move over to a blog-based online presence like many small businesses have, the answer might be yes. Self-hosted blogging platforms like Wordpress have plugins and Google’s Blogger has easy built-in templates that will move your blog-based content over to a more simplified interface, optimized for smaller screens. The transition might not be perfect, but it’s a start, while you consider more robust options.
