Behind The Scenes With Courtney Love - Satisfying or Unsettling?
Gawker posted the above video Courtney Love uploaded of her pre-show routine and semi-rehearsal from a show she did recently, speculated to be NYC club, The Standard. I will spare you the Gawker snark, and give you the straight dope (pun intended) on this bizarre display of unnecessary exhibitionism.
From one perspective, I found this video very interesting. You don't often get to see a well-known artist (and say what you will, Courtney Love is certainly well-known) warming up and preparing for a live show, especially in their hotel room. So that was kind of cool, but the reality is, you can't help but notice how far off the mark Courtney really is from being a star these days.
Besides looking like a mess, which is nothing new for Love, her voice, never a stellar tool to begin with, sound even more abrasive than usual. Sure it's unique and that's cool, but years of alleged drug abuse seems to have taken its toll. Cue Whitney Houston for an example of a once great singer destroying their gift.
Love was rehearsing The Replacements' "Unsatisfied," a rather mellow number from the Minneapolis band. Her version is not terribly satisfying, nor does she take the process seriously, as she flits around her hotel room caking on the makeup, looking more like a stripper than a diva who once rocked Lollapalooza.
The final nail in the surreal coffin was when Courtney's assistant pops in the room and asks Courtney "Do you need anything else from the pharmacy besides [of course] the prescriptions?"
Why Courtney, would you not edit that out? Sigh.
