Music supervisors are no longer just a listing in the end credits. Music supervisors are the new A&R. The final season generates some controversy as the Dish Network drops the show from its service.
The soundtrack helps sell the show. The show helps sell products and services. Performers and entertainment professionals endorse products and services. Products and services help turn performers into stars. Audiences and fans consume the goods and services that make the stars, that sponsor the shows...
The content of TV shows clearly demonstrates there is plenty of freedom to be artistic without ever once having to blatantly promote a product. Law & Order's Vincent D'Onofrio is not going to suddenly stop in the middle of a murder investigation and flash a can of Pepsi. Then again, I could be wrong.
But this is all old. We enter a new age in the convergence of TV, corporate sponsorship and the branding of entertainment...and the entertainment of branding.
