Courtney Love's Inflammatory Tweets Land Her In Court
Courtney and her copy-editor perhaps?
Courtney Love is well known for bizarre behavior - sometimes REALLY bizarre. Her tweets on her now closed Twitter account are legendary in celeb tabloid circles. To put it bluntly, Love's relationship with Twitter is best likened to someone with Tourette's sitting in church: on one hand you can appreciate their efforts; on the other, the cursing and incoherent ranting often distracts from the sermon.
Courtney's tweeting antics aren't just fodder for the celeb blogs, now she's in legal hot water. Courtney took to Twitter and made libelous statements about fashion designer Dawn Simorangkir after she and the designer had a disagreement over payments for clothes Simorangkir had designed for Love.
According to reports, Courtney discovered Simorangkir on the independent sellers marketplace Etsy.com and commissioned her to do work, including having her flown to Los Angeles. All was well until Love received the bill for the designer's work. The incoherent vitriol wasn't just ranting, it was defamatory and according to Simorangkir's lawyer, libelous. Here's a sample of the tweets from Love about the designer:
oi vey don't f*** with my wardrobe or you will end up in a circle of corched earth hunted til your dead."
"as one of her many bullied victims smashes her face soon as she's an assault addict herself (there's apparently prostitution in her record too"..
Love also accused Simorangkir of selling cocaine in one of her infamous tweets, so adding prostitution in there isn't all that big a deal. What's one more felony? Oddly enough, despite Love's penchant for poor grammar and even worse spelling, her hate-filled posts must have been clear enough to readers, because Ms. Simorangkir filed the libel suit after having her named dragged through the mud: confusing, bewildering mud, but mud none the less.
Courtney Love's case is a lesson in the dangers of misusing social media tools, especially by insulated, isolated and possibly drug-addled celebs. Once again we learn the journey into Web 2.0 is unpredictable.
