Welcome to the first Dark Horse comics review of March in 2012. I know, March, right? The year has gone by so quick. It's a small week from Dark Horse Comics but a fantastic week, as well. Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. We take the time to read these books so your time isn't wasted.

Hellboy - The Storm and The Fury

I was a little unclear of the significance of this collection when I first cracked it open. I'm a big fan of Hellboy and his universe but I don't pay much attention to what's happening in the news. So the whole year-long Hell On Earth event was always on the periphery. The regular B.P.R.D. books hinted at what's happened and what's coming but it was still vague.

That all changed when I read this trade paperback. It collected the three-issue miniseries The Storm and the three-issue miniseries The Fury. Each story dealt with Hellboy's ascension to King of England and his final battle against the Ogdru Jahad.

Everything that has come before has built up to this point. Hellboy's origins. His friends. His enemies. His weird adventures. His family. His loved ones. Everything has lead this wonderful and complicated character to the very thing he was brought into this world to do.

And he does it. He stops the greatest threat our world has ever faced. He faces a threat greater than he could ever imagine. Other forces marshaled to his aide and they managed to hold the line and snatch victory out of the jaws of defeat. In the middle of this, he manages to prevent his destiny from occurring.

But it came at the ultimate price. The underlying definition of a hero is one who is willing to become a martyr for his cause. And Hellboy gives everything he has to save everything he loves. Right down to his life.
