Dark Horse Comics - New Release Reviews For June 20, 2012
It was Father's Day last weekend and fathers are an important aspect of comics books. Their influence can be felt in relationships with their children, their inspiration when they pass on, and just generally as heroes. Dark Horse is looking to honor fathers everywhere with some great new comics this week. Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. We take the time to read these books so your time isn't wasted.
Alabaster: Wolves - Issue 3
This series is challenging to peg where it fits. The protagonist's age leads this towards more of a young adult genre but the subject and dialogue skew older. The series is violent with very dark themes.
This issue, in particular is brutal in how women are viewed and treated. The weakest aspect of this series is the passive quality of the lead, yet she still is tougher than she comes across. The artwork is solid.
Score: 7 out of 10
Baltimore: Dr. Leskovar's Remedy - Issue 1 (of 2)
This new mini-series continues the exploits of Lord Baltimore and his brutal quest for revenge. Given his actions, it's still not clear if he's a hero in this world or just a lesser evil. The story begins as another untold tale of Baltimore comes to a crashing halt.
This miniseries matches the bleakness of the prior series and it captures the ever-escalating sense of dread in this universe. The art is excellent and there are a lot of crabs running around that figure to become more important in the next issue.
Score: 8.5 out of 10
B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth : The Devil's Engine - Issue 2 (of 3)
Even though the lead characters in this story hardly seem sympathetic, they must be as the peril they face escalates with each passing moment. It's scary stuff, which is consistent for the Hellboy world. There is a secondary story-line that seem ominous but is a bit confusing as well. The art is subtle and effective.
Score: 8 out of 10
Dark Horse Presents - Issue 13
This wasn't the best edition of Dark Horse Presents that's come out in its current run. Most of the stories were just OK. The Ghost was pleasant, without any consequences. The Creep might be over but no one would miss it. Finder continues to be pleasant, yet unmoving.
Aliens : Inhuman Condition, Nexus, and Mister X all look fantastic but are bland. Criminal Macabre is still a blast but it's ugly. The Black Beetle is bland. The Occultist is actually getting better. Profile : A Cross Story was the only story that was excellent.
