Dark Horse Comics - New Release Reviews For August 15, 2012
This week's New Release Reviews for Dark Horse Comics is loaded with Joss Whedon. It was revealed this past week that he would be writing and directing the next Avengers movie, as well as guiding an upcoming Marvel television series.
Among this week's releases from Dark Horse is a collected edition of a Firefly mini-series that was the prelude to Serenity. There are two other new issues as well as one more collected edition. Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. We take the time to read these books so your time isn't wasted.
Alabaster : Wolves - Issue 5 (of 5)
This is the best cover to this series, so far. It's beautiful yet disturbing and violent. The story itself is all about choices. And the lead character never seems like she makes the right one, even though she manages to keep surviving. Even if her friends don't seem to survive.
This story is very dark, with demons and murder popping up everywhere. This arc has and ending of sorts. Though based on a series of young adult stories, this comic isn't meant for very young adults.
Score: 8 out of 10
B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth : Russia - Collected Editions
This collected edition includes the excellent miniseries of the same name. Johann and Kate travel to Russia and are forced to fight a familiar enemy. This is hard enough without everyone keeping secrets including members of Russia's equivalent of the B.P.R.D.
Like the series, this story is bleak and depressing, offering little hope for a positive outcome. It's violent, dark, and angry. And it requires knowledge about this universe to get the full impact. Excellent art and story combine into something special.
