Dark Horse Comics - New Release Reviews For December 19, 2012
Dark Horse has a history of comics inspiring films. Recently, Hellboy filmmaker Guillermo del Toro wrote a vampire novel called The Strain which Dark Horse is adapting into a comic book series. That's not too confusing. Mr. del Toro is currently in the news for a new project.
A trailer has been released for his new film Pacific Rim which opens next year. The film is a loving homage to a genre of film near and dear to his heart. Mainly, Japanese Godzilla style films. Two of the comics reviewed from Dark Horse have characters Mr. del Toro has worked with before. Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth : Return Of The Master - Issue 5
One phrase describes this issue. Holy Hell. The world is crumbling and society has taken a dump. Two enemies were emerging but it's not clear if they're both standing. The B.P.R.D. is imploding, almost as fast as the rest of the world, however one major hero who had been MIA for a while seems to have returned. And now everyone is waiting Hellboy to come back. Great interior art. Crazy, disturbing cover.
Score: 9.5 out of 10
Empowered - One-Shot Special
Readers are either going to love this series or hate it. You either see it as sexy parody of the medium, or you are disgusted by its demeaning and sexist qualities. Only the title character is not a complete ass, and she's still a doormat. The art is fine, though the B&W to color shift is odd.
Score: 4 out of 10
Rotten Apples - One Shot
This issue collects the story serialized in Dark Horse Presents. It's a fairly straight-forward story about a mercenary trying to recover an artifact. What is kind of cool is the opposition she encounters in all of its Universal Monsters design. Artwork is fine, though composition is a bit off. It's fun and silly and weird.Continued on the next page
