Dark Shadows: When Angelique Bit Johnny Carson - Page 3
The constant challenge of thought was only one part of what lured the audiences away from reality.
“Jonathan Frid played that – he was in turmoil, he was troubled and in deep anguish over his terrible predicament. He wanted to love and he couldn’t because anyone he loved would die. Those are deep and strong themes that reverberate throughout literature. We reused so many of the classic horror stories; we retold them in our own way. People always wonder about the new film and ask ‘how can they remake our wonderful TV series?’ Well, that’s exactly what we were doing with those stories.”
Of course, not only was there a constant challenging of thought – there was also the good light-hearted fun that came with being one of television’s biggest shows in the late 1960’s – there were plenty of other escapes…
Lara Parker was not only known as Angelique, but she was also the witch that put the bite on the one and the only Johnny Carson.
“Yes, I bit Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. I took my [fangs] to the show and kept them in my hand during the interview, and then asked him to embrace me. ‘Come give me comfort,’ I said. When the camera went off me I slipped my [fangs] in and when he looked at me his eyes grew wide in horror! I bit him and he spun around three times and fainted. I thought I had killed him!”
Dark Shadows fans are some of the most loyal in the world, Lara recognizes that.
“I’m devoted to my fans, I know that their loyalty to the Dark Shadows legacy is one of the reasons that this movie has been made. They kept the spirit and soul of Dark Shadows alive. I’m very grateful to them for their affection and their loyalty.”
We are just as grateful for having been graced by her presence on the screen, she is still OUR Angelique.
Lara has written a trilogy of Dark Shadows books, the first in the series entitled Angelique’s Descent, the second called The Salem Branch and a third being released this summer. For more information, please visit her website.
