IDW Publishing - New Release Reviews For January 2, 2013

It's a brand new year of comic books from IDW Publishing, and one of their properties is all over the news of late. The Star Trek franchise (collected edition reviewed below) has been generating all sorts of buzz. First was the release of the trailer for the next movie. Next was hints that Easter Eggs about the movie are hidden in the comic book.
Lastly, there were reports that were in keeping with the holiday spirit. A patient dealing with the last months of terminal cancer was treated to a special, preview screening of the unfinished film. Kudos to the filmmakers for doing something special for fans. Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. We take the time to read these books so your time isn't wasted.
Godzilla : The Half Century War - Issue 4 (of 5)
This series is as much about the giant monster as it is about one man and the effects of a war that last for decades. It's a war he can't win and has become marginalized in. It spends a lot of time focusing on how technology seems to be dehumanizing. What was very cool was the sudden dynamic shifts for characters. The art is excellent and the cover is amazing.
Score: 8.5 out of 10
My Little Pony - Issue 2
Fun. This continues to be a fun series that should really be geared more to preteen girls but apparently people of all ages and genders are fans. The conflict continues to be amusing, with very minor peril. The artwork is pleasing with bright colors.
And, for some reason the publisher continues to offer over a dozen variant covers. The Doctor Who and Lord Of The Rings homages were amusing.
Score: 7 out of 10
Doctor Who Season 3 - Issue 4
What was most interesting about this issue was all the insight given into the TARDIS and how it behaves. Otherwise, this is just a normal fun Doctor Who story. It's a light and breezy story with little peril and a touch of hand-wringing by Rory. The covers are a mixed bad and the interior artwork is adequate.
