In major comic book news last week, a decisive decision was made concerning Superman. The 9th Circuit Court Of Appeals ruled in favor of Warner Bros., regarding the rights to the Man Of Steel. They found a prior ruling to be "wrongful," allowing DC Comics to continue using the character. In 2008, a Federal Judge had ruled the heirs of one of Superman's creator retained his rights, in a case that had begun in 2001.

DC Comics claimed that the rights reverted back to them in a prior settlement. IDW Publishing is releasing a new series by John Byrne, one of the more well-known artist who have handled Superman over the years, as well as five other comics this week. Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. We take the time to read these books so your time isn't wasted.

The High Ways - Issue 1

John Byrne is back and he brought with him some excellent science-fiction. Not just sci-fi but hard science fiction. Most noticeably in the complicated space physics of interstellar travel. He does a fine job of creating a futuristic civilization and creating rules within that society. Really, the weakest part were the characters who were kind of flat. In particular is the lead who is extremely passive. Still, the artwork is wonderful, as is the cover.

Score: 8 out of 10

Joe Schreiber's Chasing The Dead - Issue 3

Three issues in and this series isn't making more sense. Characters suddenly are introduced and they are integral to the story, even if doesn't make narrative sense. And then many of the mysteries are answered with supernatural explanations, yet it still doesn't make things flow any better. There are major revelations that seem to come with no effort. The cover is pretty cool and the interior art is adequate.

Score: 5 out of 10

Mars Attacks Ghostbusters - One Shot

This seemed like a great idea until it was revealed that it is not the Ghostbusters that IDW has been publishing lately. It's a series called The Real Ghostbusters which isn't as well written or drawn. In fact, it's just not very good at much of anything. The covers are pretty excellent, though.
