Image Comics - New Release Reviews For June 20, 2012
Exciting news this week about a writer who briefly wrote for Image Comics. Super-star writer Grant Morrison was made a Member of the British Empire by her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It's quite an honor for this Scotsman. Image Comics honors the rest of the fans with some great new comics this week. Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. We take the time to read these books so your time isn't wasted.
Chew - Issue 27
This is a very clever and funny issue of a clever and funny series. The story is strange but it moves forward in a snappy pace. There continues to be fantastic little things going on in the background. And the character's abilities are odd but they work. The back up tale has one page of art that's borderline genius.
Score: 8.5 out of 10
The Darkness - Issue 104
This comic is not great. The story is forgettable with characters that aren't engaging and a convoluted rebooting of the universe. The art is murky and at points confusing. The worst part is everything is cliches. Shocking to see how long this has been published.
Score: 4 out of 10
Elephantmen - Issue 40
The most prominent aspect to this comic is the outstanding artwork and the way it carries the story forward. And it's a dark and intrigue-filled story. The biggest issue is that it's a story that requires a great deal of knowledge of prior events which is hard on new readers. The back-up stories are very strange.
Score: 6.5 out of 10
Glory - Issue 27
This series is deserving of more attention as it's rather clever. The characters aren't somewhat cartoon-like in their behavior and dialogue but the underlying concept of Glory is very sophisticated. And the issue's ending has a surprise that was very shocking. It's unclear if this is because or luck or design.
