This has been a particularly noteworthy summer for comic books with movie tie-ins and moments of national tragedy. It shouldn't be lost on anyone with a pulse that comic books are, first and foremost, a business. Sales are tracked by title and by month. The numbers have come in and this past June's numbers were impressive. This was the first month, this year, to have eight titles cross the hundred-thousand unit marker.

Overall for the month, it was a four percent increase in sales over the month of May. Year-to-date, sales are up over eighteen percent from 2011 at the same time. Other industries may be struggling but comic books seem to be doing alright these days. To continue that trend, Image Comics is offering nine new comic releases to help grow this number. Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. We take the time to read these books so your time isn't wasted.

Mondo - Issue 3 (of 3)

This is the last issue in this bizarre comic book miniseries about irradiated chickens, a satellite crashing to earth, and a giant squid rampaging though Venice, California. The art is crazy and the story crazier. There are some ultra-sexual moments contrasted with some goofy news reports. Weird but awesome.

Score: 8.5 out of 10

Think Tank - Issue 1

Think Tank focuses on an under-motivated genius who develops weapons for the military. Until maybe he stops. There seems to be some time-shifting in the story, but it's not clear.

This is a fun story about a classic character who ruffles all the wrong feathers, and his luck might be running out. The artwork is pleasant and simple. It has a positive message about being yourself. And it has some amount of upside, assuming the lead makes some decisions.

Score: 7.5 out of 10
