It's an extremely quiet week in the world of comic books. New Release Reviews isn't doing reviews for Dark Horse Comics and IDW Publishing as they have no new releases this week. Image Comics does have two new releases, so we're looking at them and three other collected editions. Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. We take the time to read these books so your time isn't wasted.

Mara - Issue 1

This new series is by the phenomenally talented writer Brian Wood, recently responsible for Dark Horse's Conan and The Massive. Both are excellent series. This comic is, for the most part, very good. The cover is wonderful with a striking image. The interior matches this quality with a decidedly European style.

Where it looses a bit of steam is in the story. When it's focused on the murder mystery, it's solid. When it's immersed in the futuristic sports world, it becomes less compelling and the ending is a bit muddled. Still, given Wood's recent accomplishments, some slack is given.

Score: 7.5 out of 10

Hip Flask Ouroborous - Issue 2 (of 3)

This is a miniseries dealing with characters from the long-running Image series Elephantmen. It's a sprawling mystery that is further complicated by time travel. It's very dark and violent, yet still manages to have light and quirky moments.

Overall the story suffers from being a bit too clinical. The artwork is excellent. And, it being from master letterer Richard Starkings, it had outstanding lettering, though the sequences over black balloons are hard to read.

Score: 7 out of 10

Chew Volume Six - Collected Edition

This volume collects issues 26 through 30 of the ongoing series as well as the special issue one of Secret Agent Poyo. If you're not familiar with this wonderful series, this is the perfect opportunity to correct that. This story-line is very strange with weird people and even weirder super-powers.
